Oh, there is no intention to employ you Pete, that was just a ploy to attract paying customers who might (understandably) be fearful of an evening in Droitwich without an armed escort. Oddly, we have no customers at all, paying or otherwise. I'm concerned that if I came on a trip, the two day discussion between Crossbat11 and I as to whether England should have selected a slow-left arm bowler in the 1982/3 England tour party to Australia might possibly be found boring by others. Not by everyone!

There has to be some sort of control, particularly on illegal economic migrants. The obvious answer is that Thatcher ended state provision of homes, and the private sector has no interest whatsoever in providing cheap housing. They need shortage and maximum return on minium built structure, and that is what successive con/lab/con have given them. Its a national scandal. Yep, posted on the old board about Shelter indicating how the private sector build at a rate to maximise returns, rather than building more properties which would lower the sale price. Not often a great idea to leave essentials to the market.

I recommend this article on the comparison between Brexit and Prohibition in the USA by Ben Ansell on Substack (his posts are free to read) benansell.substack.com/p/brexits-21st-amendmentNotably, it was FDR announcing at the Democrat nominating convention that he would campaign for repeal that was the big momentum-changer (and this despite his wife Eleanor being an active 'dry'). One has to think, what would it take for Starmer to come out in favour of rejoin. Perhaps two years of "trying to make Brexit work", like Blair and Brown sticking to Tory spending pledges for two years from 1997.

leftieliberal Wouldn't the abject failure of the last two years trying to make Brexit work be sufficient to show that that particular clown car never will work. It reminds me of my mother, when we could no longer afford her private very sheltered housing it was evident that she needed a move to a residential home. The local authority assessed her needs and agreed then promptly sent her to sheltered housing again, because believe it or not they needed to see it fail for themselves. Of course it did and two weeks later she was in hospital and not discharged until a residential home placement was available. By which time her dementia had deteriorated to such an extent that she needed a nursing home instead. Do we really need Starmer to prove that Brexit doesn't work and the cure isn't making it "better." It's getting rid of it as unfit for purpose.

Small boats week has been a complete disaster for Rishi-CON and the 'failure' to tackle the issue is likely to see it shift further to the Right. RUK are upping the ante and as stated previously will quite likely become a defacto single issue party into GE'24...

Just a reminder of some of the rights the Tories want to ditch because of something to do with boats or brown people or maybe it's brown boats who the fuck knows but it's definitely sovereignty on and blue passports.
Reminder. Some of the rights and freedoms secured by the European Convention on Human Rights include:
- the right to life (Article 2) - freedom from torture (Article 3) - freedom from slavery (Article 4) - the right to liberty (Article 5) - the right to a fair trial (Article 6) - the right not to be punished for something that wasn’t against the law at the time (Article 7) - the right to respect for family and private life (Article 8) - freedom of thought, conscience and religion (Article 9) - freedom of expression (Article 10) - freedom of assembly (Article 11) - the right to marry and start a family (Article 12) - the right not to be discriminated against in respect of these rights (Article 14) - the right to protection of property (Protocol 1, Article 1) - the right to education (Protocol 1, Article 2) - the right to participate in free elections (Protocol 1, Article 3) - the abolition of the death penalty (Protocol 13)

Imagine how absolutely awful things would be if they were efficient at delivering their selfish, inhumane, self seeking, vote chasing, cruel policies!

It might have had some small effect on current inflation caused by the Ukraine war but most countries have seen inflation. It's already coming down anyway. What, 20% inflation s coming down to 5-10% so we should all be happy?
CPI 12-month rate peaked at 11.1% last October. In June it was 7.9%. It has fallen or stayed the same in every month but one since.

mercian Are you having trouble with the concept of "secured by"? Incidentally we didn't" join"the ECHR we were one of the countries that drafted and implemented it 70 years ago.

I can't see how CON can kick that can until GE'24. The only +ve from 'Small Boats Week' has been to show that CON have to get this properly sorted. Opinion polling shows it's an important issue for CON/likely CON voters and other polling shows folks think CON are doing a bad job of sorting it.

Also from R&W with the huge caveat of 'hypothetical polling' and wording then..
Given Greens exist for the Far-Left, "let everyone in", woke, degrowth types and RUK exist for people at the opposite end of the spectrum then I'm not sure where the 'gap' is but worth looking into the x-breaks.

The real inflation rate experienced by someone is not the CPI average, but depends on what you personally spend your money on. There are big variations between segments, but we had huge rises in energy and food. Kinda what the poor buy. The rich did a lot better. Do they publish a stat for effective inflation rate vs family income?
