For what its worth, the jovial local party reps greeting each other outside the polling station seemed to think that the gainers in hastings would be Greens and independant labour.

I don't understand why left wingers are so obsessed with the past. Until quite recently nearly every ill was blamed on Mrs Thatcher. Now everything's blamed on Brexit. Everything's always someone else's fault, no matter how long ago it was. Very true, but it works both ways round. Not so long ago a big group of people, mostly on the right, was blaming every problem we have on having joined the EU 50 years previously. And there is some truth, that the situation we are in today is the result of choices in the past. Thats very true. We need to forget the history of how we got here and choose the best thing to do. Which is to join the EU as fast as possible. We need to forget the referendum result from the past and do whats right for britain now, by joining the trade block on our doorstep. If you are suggesting that that should be done without a referendum it would risk serious social unrest. And if with a referendum I suspect the majority of voters would wonder why we were doing the same thing again? Also of course there is the small matter of whether the EU would want to have what they would rightly see as an unreliable partner back again.

There's no chance of officially rejoining anytime soon (gradual realignment by stealth will be the order of the day) but if we did, serious social unrest? Give me a f break! Anyone under the age of 60 will either be rejoicing or at worst not care. What would you all do, blockade roads with your zimmerframes? 🙂

Local elections: It seems that in Dudley several ex-Labour councillors are now standing as independents, having left Labour over the Gaza issue. It will be interesting to see how widespread this movement is, and of course how successful they are. I find it a bit concerning that foreign affairs, particularly when influenced by religion, should be an issue in local council elections. What do they expect Dudley council to do? Put a little Palestinian flag by every pothole they fix?

Glad you're not obsessed with the past. You'll no doubt be very happy to destroy all the statues of slave traders then. Let's throw all the Churchill statues while we're at it. Game on.
Anyway, not sure what to do about tonight's election coverage. Pretty busy time at work, and the first few hours aren't going to be that interesting I guess, just more posturing from all sides. So think I might try to get some sleep and get up early when there are actually some results to contemplate.
It is worth remembering that very little interesting will happen overnight (Blackpool South excepted) and we'll get a clearer view of the overall results by Friday afternoon. Some of the big mayor votes (London, West Midlands) will likely be Saturday. Not a huge amount of point in losing sleep when we have two days of results to come. But I've got the Malbec breathing, the popcorn machine dusted down and all manner of Hob Nobs. Who knew there were so many varieties; original, milk choc., plain choc, flapjack with chocolate, fully coated with chocolate, gluten free ordinary, gluten free chocolate, macaroon flavour, chocolate and vanilla creams. Multi culturalism at its finest. And someone's smuggled in a large bag of Cheesy Wotsits which surely qualify for the Election Selection.

(Was briefly tempted by a tube of Pringles, but bought some strawberries instead. Wotsits are a good shout tho’)

This from another site: "And I'm done at the polling station, who wants some anecdotes? On voter ID, we had to send away about 12 people at our station (out of 470 odd) and all but 2 came back later. 2 people used the voter authority certificates. Anyone else got any queries? This was in West Norwood, Lambeth."
OK it's a one-off anecdote but it doesn't chime with the lefty mantra of widespread vote suppression.

In the week after the seasonal winter covid monitoring report was closed for the summer, hospitalisations from Covid increased 30%. There appears to be another wave underway, probably driven by the JN.1 'FLiRT' mutations, giving yet another example of why this is not a seasonal virus and there is no herd immunity. Tiresome, so keep repeating the same mistakes, over and over. Then why dont you address your complaint to the government instead of us, because clearly its they and their advisors who believe its only a winter problem? You keep banging on that if only we could sterilise the air, we would end covid. Well, when the weather warms up, we open our windows, increase ventilation, and the problem blows away! Good to know that every time you go into a pub, shop, restaurant, theatre, cinema etc that you immediately open the (often non-existent windows) and breathe fresh air. Of course, in many locations you would need to go in on a bulldozer to smash a hole in the wall to achieve this.

Not sure what you mean. The US was colonised by immigrants in recent times compared to most places. Ignoring the native americans (as the settlers did), the human history of the US goes back hundreds of years compared to other places going back thousands, even tens of thousands. The US population density is about 35 per sq km, whereas its 277 in the UK. 106 for the EU, europe 72. World excluding antarctica 60, all land 54. Japan 326, India 435, China 149. Greenland 0.03. Roughly speaking the US population density is 1/10 that of Uk or Japan or India. Its got a very low population density for a developed country, huge amounts of spare land compared to others. Although i dont believe land is really the issue here, its about what sort of society you want to have or maintain.
Australia is 3, with as mentioned higher GDP per capita than the UK. Canada 4. So both roughtly on 1/10 the US population density. The US is on 8th place in GDP (PPP) per capita at $85,000 according to the IMF, although wiki also give two other different estimating methods which differ quite a bit. Australia, $66,000, the EU $59,000, UK $59,000, Japan $54,000, india $10,000. Luxembourg top at $144,000 and Republic of Ireland third at $134,000. Maybe thats why refugess want to go there? Isle of Man is listed by the CIA but not IMF and scores about twice the UK.

The common theme is disenchantment with both main parties.

OK it's a one-off anecdote but it doesn't chime with the lefty mantra of widespread vote suppression. Surely conservatives have admitted it was intended to be a labour vote suppression method, but largely failed? I suspect because the biggest labour vote suppression mechanism is already those who dont turn out, but the others are all tooled up ready. The stats likely sugested lots of labour people would be unable to vote, but these likely coincide with the ones who wouldnt bother anyway.

Maybe Tunnocks Chocolate Teacakes deserve an honourary inclusion reserved for propitious events only.

As the votes in a lot of wards are likely to be in the low hundreds how can it take so long to announce results? Is it because councils wait until all wards are in I wonder?

Possibly because votes for the PCC have been included in the sme ballot box. As a result, an extra stage is added to the count.

I'm pleased to say my last cigarette was smoked in 1986 and I can honestly say I've never missed them. I gave up nearly a decade ago. (Occasionally get the briefest of pangs, once every few months, but only for like a second or two and nowhere near enough to start again). First thing I did with the money I saved was buy a new guitar (one that had popped up on sale in the ads on the old UKPR site)

Some local results coming in. I'm not going to try to keep up with them all, but a few have declared in Sunderland, with Reform beating the Tories in all the ones I've seen so far. vote-2012.proboards.com/thread/17550/sunderland?page=2It's obviously good news for Labour in the short term, but it does seem to show that disillusioned Tories aren't flocking to them.

As the votes in a lot of wards are likely to be in the low hundreds how can it take so long to announce results? Is it because councils wait until all wards are in I wonder? On past form I think the likes of the BBC wait for a full council declaration, whereas councils themselves declare seat by seat as the results are available. But more practically tonight, there will be two or three lots of ballot papers to separate at many counts before counting can start due to the PCCs and Regional Mayors coinciding with the council elections and that will slow things down considerably. Also I believe it's only about a third of councils that are even counting overnight (for that reason).

When I voted at c3 pm, (the PCC election is the only game in town here today), I was the only voter in the polling station. I asked the tellers about turnout and at that time it was less than 10%. When we returned from our coffee about an hour later, though, we did thankfully see another voter emerging from the polling station.
Safe to say, though, I think, the PCC elections don't seem to have fired the imagination of the electorate in this neck of the woods.

Possibly cos most of the people who are excluded from voting will generally realise they have been excluded from voting and won't try to vote in the first place? You're in good company tbf tho; "There is significant undetected fraud!" "Almost no-one is prosecuted for fraud so this claim is debunked!" "The massive expansion of postal voting has led to some very dodgy local outcomes which question whether it's still a secret ballot." "Mandatory voter ID at polling stations will protect the integrity of our process!" "We want the electoral registers to be more up to date, people move around a lot and registrations tend to linger after becoming redundant." "A million entries were removed from the registers, that's a million people wrongly denied the right to vote!" It's like talking at cross-purposes is compulsory in this area.

@isa "the PCC elections don't seem to have fired the imagination of the electorate in this neck of the woods."
I don't think many voters know what they're for. I'm pretty vague about it myself, but I did vote against the candidate who has been reported to the police for possibly breaking electoral law.

It's highly unlikely. However, as we have seem in the past, differential Turnout for Lab/Con votes in Inner and Outer London can make the Mayoral Election a close run thing.

From Mr Usherwood's Linkedin as Political Editor of LBC; "This country has witnessed nearly a decade of political turmoil. As political editor at LBC, I have been at the forefront of it. I know how Westminster works, what it is happening and why it’s happening. My contacts are second to none, from Labour to the Tories, and from the Lib Dems to the SNP. I know how to work quickly and under pressure to meet tight deadlines and deliver results. I am an excellent communicator, having learnt from the very best at LBC." Tomorrow he's either going to look like a well-connected genius or an utter prat. Fairly confident I know which.
