Whilst I have no wish to see this happen, if Starmer comes a cropper via a FPN he will have brought it on himself. The said incident occurred in the course of last year's Hartlepool by election - an election which he was utterly stupid to bring about by persuading the MP to resign. I note too that on the basis of this week's Local Election result there Labour would now have held the seat fairly comfortably! It confirms my sense that Starmer lacks a political brain. I am unsure if Starmer had an option other than persuading Hill to resign. He was an MP who breached the Parliament’ sexual misconduct policy. An employee in any other organisation would face a similar outcome. There were other examples of political naivety in Labour’s by-election campaign in Hartlepool, but persuading Hill to stand down wasn’t one of them.

I strongly disagree with those who label the LDs as LOC. Whilst not Tories , they are firmly ROC - particularly in terms of economic policy with their views being closer to Sunak than Johnson. I'm not too keen on doing so myself - but in the UK the political centre is still relatively to the right as opposed to other countries (Corbyn and his overall economic policy stance was fairly middle of the road mainstream in Europe).

Headlines from here in Swansea :
Uplands : 4 Uplands Councillors Party (Previously 2 UCP, 2 Lab).
Uplands is generally upper working class/lower middle class, mostly terraced housing, the first small shopping centre outside the city centre.
[The Uplands Councillors Party are former LibDems who left the LibDems when they went into coalition with the Tories, were generally left of centre LibDems in the Charles Kennedy mould]. --- Sketty : Tory loss to LibDem
LibDems now have all 5 Sketty Councillors.
Sketty is generally middle class, terraced housing on it's edges, and a mix of semi-detached and detached in it's south/centre. --- Mayals : Green gain from tory.
Mayals, near the coast on Swansea's west side, with luscious sea views, is generally an upper middle class/upper class area, leafy, quiet. Those that live there include surgeons, solicitors, bankers. Associatd also with 'old money'.

He should have withdrawn the Labour Whip and left it at that - rather than being responsible for an own goal by presenting the Tories with an avoidable by election gain at the peak of Johnson's vaccine bounce. Moreover, the Tory MP for Delyn is still sitting! Were Hill's offences any more serious than those of Roberts? It may well be the case that in due course a Recall Petition might have unseated Hill - but that would likely have delayed any by election until 2022 by which time Labour would have been much better placed to retain the seat - as suggested by this week's elections in Hartlepool. It really is not unreasonable to expect a party leader to think politically in this way.

But Starmer's attitude plays very well if positioning yourself as straight as a die and in comparison with Johnson's crookedness. And facing off against an 80 seat majority, losing Hartlepool is neither here nor there so early in a Parliament.

He should have withdrawn the Labour Whip and left it at that - rather than being responsible for an own goal by presenting the Tories with an avoidable by election gain at the peak of Johnson's vaccine bounce. Starmer did the right thing. Of course the MP should have resigned. Sexual misconduct is not taken seriously enough. Why do you think something like the 'me too' movement needed to exist? I am someone who is critical of Starmer on many things, but, on this, he got it spot on - and, yes, even if that meant a tory gain in a by-election. Moreover, the Tory MP for Delyn is still sitting! Were Hill's offences any more serious than those of Roberts? It is not a race to the bottom! This shows the difference between Starmer and Johnson, the latter being someone who has lied to and cheated on all of his previous wives and girlfriends - and as a journalist writing a piece on a Labour Party confeence, used what he called a "totty meter" to rate female speakers.

No - it was not in his power to force Hill to resign but by persuading him to do so he caused the party serious damage. He compounded his error by very nearly repeating it by calling the Batley& Spen by election too soon. That was a very lucky escape for Starmer which owed nothing to his judgement at all. Had Labour lost that too , I believe he would have had to resign.

SDA.
Presumably that's Yorkshire in the west country! People who live in St Albans twenty miles to the north of London and 110 miles west of Norfolk might be categorised as in the East of England, but it isn't.

I don't think you've got the hang of posting your wordle scores yet! I'd post them on the Wordle thread if I was going to, but as other peoples' scores just come out as grey or white squares on my PC I can't really see the point.

In Northern Ireland one would expect the SDLP to pick up most Sein Fein Transfers and those that move left from the APNI.
There is much more movement from SF straight to APNI and the other way than might be expected based on economic and constitutional considerations.
The explanation would appear to be the SDLPs equivocation on social issues, equal marriage and especially abortion rights
Official policy may be to support both but they tolerate many social conservatives including Nichola Mallon for example.

One more seat and Aspire would take Tower Hamlets outright:
Election results by party Party name Seats won Aspire 22 Labour Party 18 Conservative 1
As there are 45 seats it's not possible to say "vote Tory get aspire" although if it ends 22 each and one Tory then the Tories could spread a rumour that they were going to put Aspire in and make Farage go even more ballistic than he already has done!

Aspire do indeed take Tower Hamlets:
Aspire 24 Lab 19 Con 1 Green 1 (at the very end)
Technically if Labour lose Croydon which based on the mayor vote is very possible (especially if votes go to smaller parties) then Labour are net zero in London in councils and must be quite close to net zero in councillors too.

Sam Coates Sky @samcoatessky Sky’s election analyst Michael Thrasher overall vote share for the local elections:
Labour 35% Tories 33%
****************
Not sure if he means this is the alternative version of the one the BBC did yesterday (just with more analysis and detail) or if he just means this was the vote share in seats that had elections. We were waiting for the Thrasher one so perhaps the former?

That is interesting, but clearly a very biased article. If Starmer is fined, I am sure he will resign. If that happens, Johnson will probably be forced to follow suit too I would suggest?

Aspire has beaten Lab to take Tower Hamlets council. The Lutfur Rahman comeback is complete. He has won the mayoralty and his party has won the council.
