Mercian It was/I’m not - well, maybe a little but that’s better than most of the alternative models.

oldnat I suppose that's from since partygate became big news again? It'll take some clawing back. I agree with those who think Johnson's days must surely be numbered.

New YouGov poll has CON down to just 28%. This is 17% down on GE2019 Lab 38 (+1) Con 28 (-5) LDem 13 (+3) Green 7 (+1) RefUK 4 (-1) (via Smithson) Be fair: roc still takes that to well over 30%.

domjg I thought stereotyping was the norm for comedies. That's what makes them funny. Why pick on the French anyway. The Germans and British airmen who appear are equally lampooned. No doubt the bbc will get round to banning it, eventually. robert I honestly have no problem with ‘Allo ‘Allo my comment was meant in jest! I loved it when I was a kid. It took the Michael out of everyone and made the ‘bad guys’ human. I’m aware of the other show as my other half has been known to indulge and it’s a kind of glossy American imagined cartoon of Frenchness.

Does anyone else wonder about the timing of these revelations? After all, the party was 18 months ago. Lots of people must have known about it - for a start the 100 who were invited. I'm amazed that it hasn't been leaked before, but also wonder who decided that this was a good moment, and why? All I can think of is that it's to steal the thunder from Covid restrictions being removed soon. Therefore suspects would be an opposition party, or sympathiser?

The need for that don’t know party is growing all the time.. Wonder how many of that extra 3% to LD is direct from con and in which part of the country?

mercianA pretender no doubt. Johnson was an useful idiot for far greater intellects within the Tory party. Nevertheless, to have a PM who is fundamentally dishonest is unprecedented.

The latest revelations/allegations - that 2 of his wife's pals, who worked for Gove and not at No 10 - were present, surely destroys Johnson's pretence that he thought this was just a No 10 work meeting that he joined?

mercian: Earl Errol would confuse Scottish speakers. Maybe try standing in Glasgow and add a bit of gentle anti-Scottish humour - which I think you would be very good at.

eor Indeed it must remain a mystery to us all. Mind you it isn't every post some related to correcting the errors of someone called " edge of reason. " Touche. I thought the phrasing was sufficiently OTT as to be clearly tongue in cheek, but evidently I missed somewhat. Again. They had a baby And now amidst the sleep deprivation and generally knackering impacts of it all, I'm clearly finding both my ability to tell when a poster is being serious and my ability to judge the tone in my non-factual responses are misfiring somewhat. Ta for the friendly warnings that I'm off my game steve and domjg , I will hopefully adjust pretty soon tho.

Or possibly a Tory with leadership ambitions? That is almost certainly why Sunak was away all day - busy sending anonymous emails to the press from Devon.

Therefore suspects would be an opposition party, or sympathiser? How many of such people do you imagine work in Downing St, and could have sent a copy of Reynold's e mail to ITV (or to someone who would have done so?)

Notable that both Truss and Sunak were slow to back the PM and gave decidedly half hearted support. Along with that YG poll, I suspect this indicates that we are now witnessing the inevitable decline and fall. Aside from the conclusions of the investigation, which would, I'm fairly sure, hand the decision back to MPs rather than be couched in terms of certain death for the PMs career, it was always going to be the reactions of voters that would determine Johnson's fate. Had Tory MPs felt that this was an issue having ittle real effect on the doorsteps, then things would be different, but a 28% poll score scuppers that hope. Interesting also to see the YG poll of Conservative members from a couple of days ago, where they showed support for Johnson remaining, while also indicating Sunak and Truss would make better leaders. There is though an awareness there. While 45% (vs 39) thought Johnson can be trusted to tell the truth,66% of them thought the general public probably or definitely didn't think he could be. That clearly suggested that Con members recognise they are not in touch with popular opinion. Still 79% of them think they will ein the next election, although it's very finely balanced whether they think Johnson will be leading them. That's quite odd, when you think about it. Tory members overwhelmingly think they will win, but don't really know who the leader will be. I tend towards the observation made by mercian regarding Sunak's Asian heritage, but my sense is that this will be less of an impediment than his general style and demeanour. A perfectly groomed Silicon Valley style former city banker who parades very expensive tastes, with a record of scuppering spending projects in the north, doesn't strike me as the kind of man to fire up the red wall. I suspect the Conservatives are in some difficulty now, with the prop of Brexit now well and truly kicked away.

eor /Robert I don't think there's a more readily polarised discussion to be had anywhere than the one that relates to who our favourite comedians may be. Humour is quite a personal thing and some comedians and/or certain comedy can have one person beside themselves with laughter whilst leaving another completely mirthless. Completely agree, I find it far easier (and often more accurate) to predict whether someone I know will like a particular bottle of wine than whether they'll find a particular comedian funny, and the former is tricky enough with some! :-) This might be me being more cynical than you (once again! :-) ) but IMO it's not that he's done the odd off-colour gag that some people continue to hold against him, it's that he's calculatedly differentiated himself in a very crowded Grumpy Leftie field by repeatedly picking an array of deliberately shocking targets, getting himself niche (and very lucrative) status as being Outrageous. He's effectively made a lot of money from punching downwards in some extremely nasty ways over a lengthy period of time, and to gloss over that and say the political gags are an example of punching upwards is, to me, like someone saying that Jim Davidson does a brilliant routine about tax evasion and is thus aiding social equality. That was why I replied, not because I imagine for a moment there's any point in trying to argue about whether someone is actually funny or not.
