It would be interesting - and highly amusing - if by tomorrow morning 55 Tory MPs have sent in letters to Brady!

Well, I intend to follow the election campaign assiduously and give Sunak every possible chance to persuade me to give the Tories another five years. Will probably start taking the Daily Mail in order to get balanced coverage. And watch GB News obviously.

or he’ll defect to Labour. (Maybe Starmer offered him a post if he calls the election early!) - it’s set the board alight anyway Maybe Sunak will defect. That would certainly improve the Tories’ chances so it would be a noble thing wot he dun.

I do find it very balanced and informative - in its own way.

If Scottish schools have already broken up for the summer by then that's really not on.

Yes of course they 'can' but like photo id it reduces the chance that many 'will'. That's the point. If the election is to be announced today, there are weeks ahead for supposedly intelligent people to manage to organise a postal vote. Political parties will be chasing them up. I was at University when Ted Heath called an election on February 7th 1974 to be held just 3 weeks later on February 28th. Virtually everybody appeared to have a postal vote. You've got me all dewy-eyed and sentimental. The February 1974 election was the first in which I was old enough to cast a vote. I hadn't long turned 18 and started University in Bristol later that year, just before the October election of that same year. I was a student radical by then. It only took a few weeks of breathing in the rarefied academic air! I voted Labour of course in that February election and we squeezed a Labour minority government out of it. I voted for the losing candidate locally though and, little did I know it at the time, I wasn't to cast a vote for a winning candidate of any sort, council or parliamentary, until 1997, some 23 years later. I had a decent run for a bit thereafter but the barren spell resumed in 2010. And it's still going, alas.

BBC 5Live saying it's definitely happening. Definitely summer. Probably 4th July. Sunak may not come out of Number 10 for another half hour.

Bizarrely, if parliament is dissolved in the next few days, Sunak's flagship smoking ban legislation will not have time to pass.

Emily Maitlis 'It’s on ! July 4th. Just had this from 3 people in last minute' OK by me, so long as they don't interrupt the footie coverage.

Given your intention not to vote Labour in Norwich North, I suspect that will continue.

Have we had a GE during a major football tournament before? 🤔 Sunak is of course a huge football fan (of a fantastic team) and should know this is playing with fire.

Given all the grumbling about some of the weird and repetitive obsessions of this site, a General Election is just what we need - a month and a half of talking about other stuff.
Also Paula Vennells must be grateful for the distraction - she is getting mangled at the Post Office enquiry and normally that would be the headline item.

I suppose the answer to the possibe leadership election conundrum is that it could not happen as after the dissolution of Parliament there are no MPs to hold the first phase of the process.
If it is 4 July I wonder if the Whitsun Recess will be cancelled to enable the "wash-up" of uncontentious legislation to happen.
