Isnt electoral timing in spring all about the weather? Becuse bad weather will push voters against the government, not just campaign volunteers? Didn't seem to do Johnson any harm to have a December election in 2019. Yes, but that was an election about a specific issue. Whats the issue now except get rid of the government?

New Icon. Here we go ! Only had 14 years to prepare though! Another weird thing about his (potential) choice of date. People will label it 'independence day' and this will gain traction. It's also my wife's birthday. Seeing as she despises this government at least as much as I do it'll be a nice pressie for her.

If true that's beyond tragic. England's prospects?? Surely not. In Harry, Jude and Phil we trust. 5th July 1945 is hopefully the template!

More speculation, but if you scroll down, there are apparently Tory MPs completely losing their sh*t, saying that even if Sunak goes to the King to seek a dissolution, they might orchestrate a coup to prevent the writ being moved! You seem to be confirming that you think the party has become ungovernable and if they dont go now it might fall apart before they do. Cameron being called back seems to be significant, because its disruped an official visit and potentially offended the Albanians. You would not do that deliberately, almost as if this was a sudden decision forced upon them.

Why is the announcement going to take place via that silly lectern - rather than a Ministerial Broadcast such as used by Callaghan in Sepember to announce he was NOT calling an election?

My highly confident informant's two defections at PMQs failed to materialise. I'm not exactly surprised, but I will be asking for his excuses! Bad day to make a political gesture, if the news is all about the election called.

New Icon. Here we go ! Only had 14 years to prepare though! I was just going to say that the first politician who makes a speech saying "let this be our independence day" should be stoned to death at the podium :-)

On the topic of the systematic failings of the British state and its inability to deliver anything at pace (which is supposed to be a core civil service behaviour!) I thought it would be worth drawing attention to this article on Grenfell: www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6pp46z93k6oCan it seriously take ten years to begin prosecutions for this? It took long enough for the inquiry to be set up. I know these things take time and the need for due process etc. (I'm a civil servant myself) but this is getting ridiculous. We clearly need both greater resources and a more rational process to follow. Can Starmer make this at least a little better? I seriously hope so. The cause behind grenfall was privatised building regulations consent for unsafe materials to be used. Also probably cutbacks in council inspection teams. In other words, the result of government policy. Just like the PO scandal and the blood products scandal. Not to mention Hillsborough was about incompetent police crowd control. The common theme is delay and delay and delay anything where blame might end up with government.

CB - didn't you vote for Richard Parker? Don't live within the West Midlands Mayoral boundaries, @jimjam, so couldn't vote for Parker. Instead on May 2nd I cast a vote for the losing candidate in the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner election, thereby continuing my almost lifetime voting tradition!!

"Who'd have thought that the government could tell people how many times they could leave their homes?" - they didn't, not in England anyway. 🤦

Returning Officers in Scotland and NI will be cursing Sunak. The school holidays also mean that many of the local authority staff that are needed to staff polling stations, and count the votes, will be on holiday. There will be serious practical problems.

They certainly can for Sunak - he's getting drenched. Nobody with umbrellas. Sad.

Disgusting comments re Starmer from Sunnak Inappropriate and most unstatesmanlike. Sunak terribly ill advised on the script, the setting for statement and overall presentation. Extraneous noise almost drowning him out. A fiasco all round.

Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.

With the rain and "Things can only get better" that was a bit of a car crash really.
But can someone explain how the PM gets to make a free, unchallenged party political broadcast when acting as a government minister?
