I think Mercian is misinterpreting his brief when I hand over to him for his Midnight Show. Not only is he extending it into a Twilight Shift but rather than be Ann Nightingale to my Bob Harris, he's taking on a shock-jock role instead. My emollience and insight followed by his rancour and acrimony. Not the subtle change of mood befitting of the midnight hour. When love should come tumbling down. I think he took a hit from Che jen last night. He wasn't his usual jocular self after. You overestimate the effect you people have. 🤣 A bit like the Brexit vote really.

EU Single Market rules ; Teeth ; and Belgian politics:- "Forty-four per cent of the dentists who start working in Belgium have a foreign diploma, raising fears over safety and an explosion in fraudulent claims for dental care. While all dentists practising in the country must appear before a “recognition committee” before setting up, regulators can do nothing to stop those who are clearly unqualified or lack language skills. “When they appear before the recognition committee they cannot answer the simplest questions,” Frank Herrebout, chairman of the Flemish Dentists’ Union, said. “Apart from the fact that they sometimes don’t even speak a word of English, they really know nothing about the business.” Herrebout has complained that regulators are helpless to act against fake Romanian dentist diplomas. EU rules ensure mobility of the professions via mutual recognition that allows “equivalence” of European qualifications. “We are at our wits’ end. We know of private schools in Romania where you can get your diploma for a fee,” he said. “Very often they lure people from North Africa with the promise of a diploma. Due to European legislation, that diploma is then valid in every European country. Belgium is especially sought after because of our strong social security.” The largest group of foreign qualified dentists — 9 per cent — are Tunisians, often with qualifications from Romania, who can practise without restrictions. The numbers of Belgians entering the profession are restricted by training quotas. Frederik Ardenois, of the Association of Flemish Dentists, says that the EU rules lead to “discrimination” against Belgian dentists who must train for longer and to higher standards. “We will have too many dentists due to this massive influx from abroad and that threatens to have a serious impact on our social security,” he told the Het Belang van Limburg regional newspaper. Belgium’s federal National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance told De Standaard newspaper that illegal dentistry posed a threat to public health and finances because of fraudulent treatment claims. “There is an illegal practice of the dental profession by foreigners. It is often accompanied by unjustified and fraudulent bills for dental care to health insurance and is obviously not conducive to public health,” a spokesman for the institute said. Frieda Gijbels, a Flemish nationalist MP and a dentist herself, has identified foreign dentists who treat more patients than allowed under safety and quality rules. “It is humanly impossible to treat so many patients,” she said." Times www.politico.eu/article/belgium-break-up-flanders-wallonia-tom-van-grieken-vlaams-belang-far-right/What a shame we're missing out on those benefits of being in the EU. Odd though that the Flemish Dentists Union complained that applicants don't know English. English must be the new lingua franca.

colin I'm not getting into this with you , however the report identified 27 cases over five years, it doesn't identify if service users were harmed, Belgium has nearly 9000 dentists. Here's a case of the type of bogus dentist I think you might be referring to On her online job application form, x claimed she was a qualified dentist and had completed the BDS in 1998 at the Sri Guru Ram Das Institute for Dental Sciences and Research in India, after studying for three years of the BDS at King’s College, London. She provided copies of certificates to the QVH and the GDC that appeared to confirm this. This individual was jailed for three years. Bogus qualifications aren't a uniquely Belgium problem. Take it up with the Belgian Dentists.

Mercian: "You overestimate the effect you people have. 🤣 A bit like the Brexit vote really."
I'm staying out of today's 'debate' here on rejoin as it's characterised by far too much heat and far too little light.
But it might be worth saying that from my europhile perspective, the arguments here this morning suggest that the EU will do well to treat the UK as a very poisoned chalice. I think it will take a period of very evident, indisputable relative decline before the "everything's fine, no real effect of brexit" tendency fades into insignificance and we are ready to make a genuine, full-hearted commitment to joining in the building of a better Europe.
In the meantime (and things could indeed get very mean) there seems little alternative to festering in brexit juice. Whether that will produce the result I hope for, or instead an ever-darkening downward spiral into god-knows-what form of extreme populist nationalism, remains to be seen.

Morning everyone.
The most disturbing (and there are a lot to chose from) thing to come out of the Republican debate last night is their unanimous man made climate-change denial. Wimmin have had lot to do with it as well. For centuries they've been in the kitchen washing dishes, washing clothes, cooking and so on - it’s not all “man-made”

Maybe if you prayed it would speed things up a bit? Alternatively you could join a political party, influence their manifesto, campaign at an election and bring change through democratic action. Which party would that be ? Any party you like - that's the whole point of democracy isn't it?

Survation for Scotland SNP 37%. 24MPs Lab 35%. 24MPs Con 17%. 6MPs LD. 6%. 5MPs Oth. 5% Highest Labour vote by Survation for Labour This is a poll with a sample of 1,022, not an MRP. Seat figures are as estimated by John Curtice*. Curtice is also quoted as saying that every seat in Scotland is a maginal. Perhaps overstating it a bit, but it does seem likely that there will be a lot of very close contests - maybe even more than in 2017. I would be surprised by the Tories keeping six, given that they are shown as retaining a significantly lower share of their 2019 vote-share (68%) than the SNP. (82%). *It looks to me like those seats figures are simple UNS, as this produces 24 for the SNP. It would also explain Con 6 seats, as both they and SNP are down 8 points, while LDs gain, as they are only down by 3**. The effects on the SNP-held seats are very strange, as they would keep their 2nd-most marginal (Gordon) of their current 48 seats, while losing their Labour-facing seats all the way down to No 39, Paisley and Renfrewshire North. **UNS would still show the LDs retaining their 4 seats against the SNP or Tories, even if they too were down by 8 points to 1.5% I remember an embarrassing poll published by the BBC (I cannot remember whether it was for the 2017 or 2019 election) that showed the Lib Dems losing O&S. It transpired that the pollsters had one sampling point north of Inverness. North of the Central Belt there are some very local factors that come into play which makes any prediction difficult. I'm inclined to trust Curtice on the overall trend (although there will be only 57 not 59 Scottish MPs after the next GE), but I think that both the Con and LD numbers could be out by up to a factor of 2 in either direction.

'Reasonable doubts' about cause of Prigozhin plane crash, France says "France said on Thursday there were “reasonable doubts” about the cause of the plane crash that presumably killed Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Russia’s Wagner paramilitary group. “We don’t yet know the circumstances of this crash. We can have some reasonable doubts,” the government spokesperson, Olivier Véran, told France 2 television." Indeed we don't know if it was a bomb or a missile!Would Putin waste a missile when a bomb smuggled on board would do the job?

Talk about 'look a squirrel' from Mr Colin. This sort of thing happens everywhere and it says nothing about either Romania and it's people (a family in our road are Romanian and we trust them more than anyone else in the village, one of them is also on the parish council. They have a key to our house) or the standard of education there, in dentistry or otherwise. It's the kind of sneering and suggestions of underhand behaviour on the part of eastern europeans from brexiters that drives me nuts. It's just offensive. It's the same attitude we see in othering generally, especially towards Albanians. The idea that they are somehow culturally morally deficient and always 'on the make', looking to extract some freebie from the host society. The Irish used to be the brunt of this once, from exactly the same sort of people with the same sort of unpleasant attitudes. If you ask me it's a certain section of English society, very good at over-estimating itself, that is morally deficient.

It's good to know that at least we've taken back control of our borders ..... Irritating, since as far as I'm concerned there is at least one unrealised Brexit benefit, namely the ability to implement stricter biosecurity controls at the border. There is a caveat though - I'm not entirely confident that it should be classified as Brexit benefit, because I've no idea whether the UK ever asked for permission to implement biosecurity controls at the border in recognition of the fact that being an island gives us a special, privileged position when it comes to keeping out plant and animal pathogens.

Tiddles has put aside his sniper rifle and is showing his affiliation with his European union feline friends.*
*He does of course have his Barret M82 close to hand . A slightly controversial choice as the M82 is more of an anti-material rifle than a true sniper rifle, but cats what can you do!

I must say I'm most surprised to have to point out to you of all people that we are no longer a member state of the EU, and therefore not covered by EU laws appertaining to food and other goods sold in the Single Market.

it says nothing about either Romania and it's people Its so interesting that people like you immediately trot out non sequiturs like that. ....Who said it does ? Of course it doesn't. It appears to say something about the porous nature of some of the professional equivalence "rules" in the EU SM. If you think the Belgian Dentists are being racist in reporting this problem-go tell them.
