Re-education... I have been saying for 20 years or more that the following needs to be done... 1. Learn a second language from the very day that pupils start school at 5. I had known a good friend for almost two years before I knew that English wasn't her first language. (Welsh is). Likewise, a majority of Bangladeshi friends are bi-lingual having had two languages spoken to them since the day they were born. At such a young age, brains really are like sponges and learning a second language from 5 - or younger would be invaluable. (Here in Wales, Welsh is taught at a young ag, but, it is usually done on a very piecemeal basis before comprehensive. 2. (Maybe more relevant to VI) Media & Social studies. It would have to be politically neutral - and separate and distinct from debating current issues. Such a class may involve, off the top of my head... * Presenting the same story from different sources (say, from the Guardian on the liberal/left side and the Daily Mail on the right), highlighting key words/descriptors from each to show how the same facts can be laid out in different ways. * On non-political/current affairs suff, why things are done in a certain way. A good example of this is a piece here on supermarkets and why products are placed where they are, it's from the US, but, a lot applies here : thegrocerystoreguy.com/why-do-grocery-stores-change-the-layout/Why would I introduce such a class? Because it's empowering. Whether media bias, from the left or the right, or something as simple as supermarket shopping, if you know and understand what is going on below the line, you are better equipped to deal with it.

The trouble for the Tories with going after the 'Alf Garnett' vote is that it can backfire. I was talking to one of my right wing in-laws the other day and he was telling me how much he hates Rishi Sunak. Primary reasons were his role in overthrowing their beloved 'Boris' and that he is too posh to understand ordinary people, but also, apparently, he is committing the sin of trying to make beer weaker and so preventing an Englishman enjoying his pint. His final remark was he wished that Sunak "would go back to India". I didn't bother pointing out that Sunak was born in Southampton. OMG I thought some of my relatives were bad but I couldn't interact someone like that without telling them exactly what I thought. My in-laws are all impeccably liberal and enlightened, including my octenagarian mother in law. It's my side of the family that are problematic alas! Things got more than a bit strained during Brexit.

So after "small boats week" steadily descended into farce, it finally ends in tragedy with six dead. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/aug/12/rescue-operation-boat-capsizes-channelIf only we had a government that was interested in taking real action such as reversing the Osborne cuts to the asylum system and the border force, clearing the asylum backlog and opening up safe routes, rather than bogus "performative" policies like the ludicrous Rwanda scheme.

Well done the Lionesses Bring on Australia Just need to waltz past the Matildas now.đŠđŠđ They showed real character against the superior French team. Should be a cracking match on Wednesday (which I shall listen to on my deaf aid during my weekly walk around Epping Forest - maybe catch the second half on telly in the pub).

I agree. The conservatives are locked into this stop-the-boats, culture-war, anti-woke, Lee Anderson hugging trajectory until the bitter end (likely to be the next election). The current iteration will be smashed, and then the party will have hard questions to face on what it really stands for in a way that's relevant to the public. The brexit at all costs course has run out of fuel. I would imagine many of the traditional conservative will retreat to the shadows, and await what could be done after the imminent car crash. Last time the Tories lost three General Elections in a row before they finally realised that they had to change from voting for leaders who related to Party members (the hang 'em and flog 'em brigade) rather than a leader who related to many people in the country (even though Cameron then turned from an approximation to a 'One Nation' Tory to the rather more hard-line kind once he was Prime Minister). I shall not be unhappy if it takes them as long again to recover from the last 13 years of Government. As long as Starmer avoids invading Iraq (or whatever the equivalent is for him) Labour should be able to look forward to multiple General Election wins.

Mark Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Yes you've identified several interesting issues. 1) Big cities becoming more Labour. That's particularly inner cities where recent immigrants and their descendants tend to be, so that's a complicating issue on top of the class/education theory. 2) 'is education becoming a bigger driver of VI than class?' A right-winger might say that there has been a long-standing agenda on the left to infiltrate higher education, and that students are no longer taught to think for themselves but just to follow the latest fashionable cause. This was even evident in my day at a mere Polytechnic when there was a mass student meeting to vote that the canteen should not serve Chilean coffee for some political reason. I was one of three out of hundreds to vote against of course. đ€Ł 3) Good point about the self-employed, small business owners etc. With the weakening of unions and the growth of the 'gig economy' and lots of people making money on ebay etc this group may be growing. One other point not directly related. I like Lee Anderson because he actually says what he thinks, but I also liked Dennis Skinner for exactly the same reason. It's very refreshing to have politicians who are blunt and direct rather than all the mealy-mouthed squirming that we get from most of them. Whether I agree with them or not. 'left to infiltrate higher education'...The right-wing have been claiming this as far back as I can remember (80s). Is there any actual proof or is it the right just can't take criticism?

Silence for nearly 24 hours from the traitor. Faced with the realisation that he's actually a criminal defendant in his coup trial and that if he doesn't comply with the terms of his bail there will be consequences, those consequences being both a speedy trial date and the very real possibility that the rapist will spend that time in custody. Of course the usual total bollocks regarding political persecution and projection will continue. But added to the cowards woes is now another concern from high profile judicial scholars from the far right federalist society , these people backed trump and would back him again in an instant but it's apparent even to them that a finding of guilt on any count in the January 6th case would render the former president ineligible for any office under the terms of the 14th amendment. The question of whether the traitor could pardon himself would then be irrelevant as he couldn't stand , which is why the coward is so frightened of a trial date before the next election. It's possible that the high probability of spending the rest of his life in prison, however comfortable a prison might means he manages to restrain himself from comment for as much as another 24 hours but until January '24 not a chance. youtu.be/V5yptTPa7sg

Hope you're having a nice relaxing weekend too Colin. I guess the tongue in cheek was a bit too subtle. It was a reference to your phrase-not your intent. When it comes to pompous social class consciousness and a sense of moral superiority , loc middle class academia and its hinterland are in a .....class.....of their own. Yes-good thanks. Wisley yesterday with grand children-the Working Class Lionesses in a few minutes. Come on You Gels. I do have a small number of friends in academia but I've always worked very much in the private sector almost always for American companies. Very fond of Wisley. Been there quite a few times as we have family in Woking.

Will anybody in this boutique, prone to calling Wimminâs footy teams âMatildasâ, âLionessesâ and so on please leave now!!!! Iâm obviously impressed- like all fair-minded blokes that young wimmin can both run AND kick a ball at the same time but I lost count of the number of disgusted âFFSakes!!!!!!!!â I was forced to shout at my iPad at Englandâs misplaced passes. Batty on one leg could probably have done better: Rosie, definitely.

Careful, you'll be in for a lecture from Trevor on the importance of playing the ball not the man or, in your case, perhaps not. (Btw, the above was a joke; I'm not remotely offended).

Without reopening the tedious debate as to whether Starmer's background is upper-working class or lower-middle class (only in Britain would anyone think this matters) I remember Orwell writing somewhere that he was lower-upper-middle class and that everyone in England would know exactly what that meant đ

In Germany the majority of asylum claims are completed between 3 and 6 months. In the UK it's up to three years. The regime's latest cunning plan not speeding up the process, gated detention housing estates ( prison camps) for asylum seekers. I've no doubt there will be a plethora of Tory cronies making money out of what seems to me even by the bat shit stupidity standards of this government unusual levels of absurdity. youtu.be/GGI-AIHles4

This seems a very murky affair
"The contract was awarded directly to CTM without competition, and a lawyer with knowledge of the system said the government had pushed a wider deal originally drawn up for official travel âbeyond what it was intended to be used forâ.
Ministers have repeatedly refused to detail the projected cost of Rishi Sunakâs controversial asylum vessels, while insisting they will be cheaper than using hotels that are currently costing ÂŁ6m a day.
Richard Drax, the Conservative MP for South Dorset, said the public âshould know how much is being paidâ on the barge set-up and said the spending he was aware of so far was âalarmingly highâ.

With news that Harry Kane is transferring to Bayern Munich for a gazillion euros I thought I would mention the big transfer news at the Hatters THE former Everton, Chelsea and England midfield star Ross Barkley has been unveiled as Luton Townâs newest .Barkley is just 29 and played for England 33 times. He is of course signing on a free transfer.âș He was on loan for a season at Villa and linked up very well with Grealish. I wonder what went wrong for him? From being an England regular to signing for Luton on a free? (No offence to Luton)
