Personally I hadn't realised that toilets were male or female. When they get together is that how portaloos get born.

As EmCat suggested as a possibility in her post, what we're seeing here I think, not only from the internal debate currently raging within the party, but also from evidence provided by opinion polling, is the slow unravelling of those rather extraordinary 2017 and 2019 Tory electoral coalitions of both voters and MPs. They were probably never really viable long term coalitions anyway, such was the unique juxtaposition of political circumstances that brough them about. I think there are three bricks that are bringing the Jenga Edifice down. The weakening of the crucial Brexit glue as time passes, the demise of Corbynism that herded many a moderate pro EU Tory cat and the incubation of the Far Right embryo that first planted itself in the party post the EU Referendum. Their votes were key in the May and Johnson victories but they also ushered in far Right members, MPs and a brand of voter who were never really Tories at all. These people are now eating the party out from within and centrist Tory voters, members and MPs are starting to abandon ship. The Jenga Edifice is now wobbling and on the verge of collapse. With a representative voting system it would never have been constructed in the first place and our benighted country would have been saved from the ruination that the ludicrous construct has wrought.

Absolutely disgraceful but entirely predictable, while the regime were scrabbling around to blame someone else for their plague barge the people who weren't told were the asylum seekers in the barge, who weren't advised not to use the water. So much for the total bollocks that their health and safety was a priority. youtu.be/d3pU9leBKMw

So a Lavatories Tsar now it seems. The Telegraph is Badenoch's chosen leadership campaign platform so the report is probably reliable: "All buildings must provide single sex lavatories" - blimey, that's going to requires a lot of rebuilding work in the UK housing stock. I suppose if you already have two loos, you could designate one as for males and the other females. Perhaps it would be simpler to segregate males and females and require them to live in separate accommodation.

steve (and oldnat who raised it earlier) - on whether the 14th Amendment could be used to prevent Trump standing; Presumably there is some body in the US which rules on whether a person is eligible to stand for president. Assuming no relevant trials had yet taken place at the date this becomes an issue, then presumably a completely separate legal process might be started to prove that Trump had taken part in insurection and so ws ineligible. So theoretically he might have an entirely new court battle to fight.

Not really big on football, but would I be correct in suggesting that following the England Lionesses progress to the semi finals, it would be fair to say that across men's and women's football combined, England would probably rank as the strongest international team overall, based on tournament placings? I can't think of another country with each of it's national teams achieving comparable tournament results. Ohh, I actually know this due to looking it up on holiday with my football mad son - according to Fifa rankings its currently France (2nd and 5th) then England (4th and 4th) that may change if the Lionesses go further in the tournament.

Personally I hadn't realised that toilets were male or female. When they get together is that how portaloos get born. Just got back from France, and most of the loos in restaurants we went to were unisex (one even had a urinal discreetly tucked into a corner). In one museum we went to, while the boy's loos was being cleaned they were directed to the ladies and no one seemed to bat an eyelid. Perhaps its just Anglo-Saxony type countries that get their knickers in a twist over gendered bathrooms?

Interesting story in the local free paper, that Hastings council just had to review whether it was insolvent and would therefore have to declare itself bankrupt. It seems this has been avoided by deciding to sell four council properties. One is a farm which might once have been prime building land but the squabble between Hastings and Bexhill whereby Bexhill refused to permit the urban zones of Hastings and Rother to unite means this is currently dead. Another is a block of six period flats which had been refurbished for a million pounds to be used as social housing. The other two are plots of land land earmarked for social housing, which will now pass out of council hands. Whether or not it ends up as social housing, remains to be seen.
The report identifies the prime reason for Hastings looming insolvency is the rising cost of providing temporary accommodation for over 1000 people. Both rising in cost per head, and number of people. I dont see how the council has any control over this area of spending as it is a statutory requirement, so all it can do is whittle away at services elsewhere.
I imagine this situation is repeating all over the country.
As another unamusing anecdote, a new road was built between Hastings and Bexhill a few years ago. As part of this scheme one final section was constructed to better filter traffic onto the main road out of Hastings, separating it from local traffic. This was built, presumably costing an awful lot per inch because it involved filling a massive valley to at least try to level it out a bit. Unfortunately there is a dispute over one final section of the road, currently occupied by a car dealership. Some very odd goings on in the past seem to have left this in legal occupation of the site, and I guess the council is unwilling or unable to pay what it would cost to move them. And so this section of new road has stood essentially unused for about 5 years. Not wholly unrelated but a separate project, there are a couple of large plots earmarked for development which have been for sale near these roads for even longer. Dont seem to be any takers for commercial or industrial use in Hastings. Its a far cry from the 60s when Hastngs was one of the places earmarked for expansion with London overspill and saw a wave of housebuilding, and indeed light industrial development. The one lasting thing they did was provide reservoirs for the town, so unlike most of the SE it has a pretty reliable summer water supply.

Re having to have male and female only toilets A lovely local cafe I go to would likely have to close It's only got one toilet and has only ever had one toilet It also is the disabled toilet It has a lockable door, with wash basin included in it. There's no room to put an additional toilet in it Seems to me this Government has enough problems without imposing a toilet law on all premises, haven't businesses got enough problems?

I dare say it would have helped had they been allowed to have no lockdown in spring 2020 because the town had covid the winter before. But then it would have helped the entire nation to have had no lockdown, and national finances would have been rather better currently. Record waiting lists for the NHS right now illustrate how foolishly that money was spent, compared to how much health benefit it could have bought if applied differently.

Omnisis's figures are a little bit on the high side for 'Rejoin' compared to other pollsters, but the average of recent polls is 59% Rejoin, 41% Stay out. What always strikes me about polling on EU Membership is how consistent and slow-moving the figures are (after allowing for house-effects and random variation). It's nothing like as changeable as Voting Intention, for example. This has not always been the case, but clearly views have become very entrenched post -2016. YouGov's figures show a move of about 5 points in each of the past two years, from 49/51 for Stay Out in July 2021, to 55/45 for Rejoin in July 2022, and most recently 60/40 for Rejoin. www.whatukthinks.org/eu/questions/should-the-united-kingdom-join-the-european-union-or-stay-out-of-the-european-union/?removed=removed&pollster%5B%5D=yougovIncidentally, it's worth noing the consistent difference between those who think that Brexit was the wrong choice and those who want to Rejoin. It's not the same question, and difference has been a consistent 3-4% over the 30+ times that YG have asked about 'Rejoin' rather than 'Right or Wrong in Hindsight'.

I was actually thinking more about tournament placings, rather than the formal rankings. alec , after having consulted with other more kickieball informed/literate members of my family, they say that while the fifa ranking system has some flaws, its is by far the best comparator there is currently . You can't really do it by tournament placings, as the regional football bodies aren't comparable, and if you were to do it by the last wc and regional competition then it would be Argentina (they have won 3 out of 4 of them men's and women's) - my sons should take the credit for this post.
