Ladies and Gentlemen, I can announce that the 2023/24 English Premier League football season officially started today. And what a start it was for the Villa too. Off to a flier. We're Aston Villa and we're taking the pi.... I’m pleased for you that the opening weekend, FIVE-ONE defeat at Newcastle has been expunged from the record books and you are, quite rightly, getting another shot at that game sometime later in the season. If, with hindsight, then your lads say they “didn’t quite feel ready on the day” then, to me, that is fair enough.

Norway+ was my preferred outcome, but accept any Brexit was preferable to no Brexit. We will gradually move to that position, but any idea of rejoin as the UK is for the birds. jib You oppose freedom of movement. Norway+ ( indeed Norway) includes FoM. Are you really that ill-informed? No I am not ill informed and I fully understand the 4 freedoms. But the option for compromise and Norway + died a long time ago. Sometime around "Brexit means Brexit".

Denmark announces 19 F-16s will be donated to Ukraine, Netherlands possibly another 42. This won't be quick, but it's a sign that Europe is now taking the lead on this. While the US has shipped huge quantities of military aid, they remain notably cautious about enhancing the type of equipment being sent.

Bizarre, but in the US Republican race, among those who say honesty is important, Trump leads, on 61% - /photo/2

Somewhere warmer perhaps? 🤔

Its funny, but we were told the reason why the vaccines targeted the spike protein was because it could not be varied. And yet here we are, it did vary. ...
Oh God. 🙄 There are two subjects that people bang on and on about here. One is Brexit and even though most voters aren't interested any more at least it's to do with politics. Covid isn't. There are bursts of posts about other irrelevant things of course, such as the Ladies Footer, but they are short lived. This Covid crap has been going on for YEARS. I thought you, as a fine exponent of the art, were in favour of the purveyance of crap on an ongoing and long term basis.

Which is what I'd expect because asking whether honesty is important seems like a rubbish filter question in an opinion poll, who's going to say no?

No idea whether it was relevant but, at the end of a long and hard tournament it doesn’t see right that one team should have a full day’s recovery time less than their opponent. Why not aim to play the semi-finals on the same day so that the difference is then only a matter of limited hours? Having the semi-finals on consecutive evenings in the men's World Cup means two lucrative TV windows instead of one. Same as the witless third place playoff got invented just to ensure the losing semi-finalists were on TV a second time, and made an extra TV window the night before the final. I suspect they've just copied the format.

Slightly techie question - is there an easy way for Youtube links posted on here to automatically include some kind of thumbnail or strapline so we have some indication of who the content provider is before clicking? Not asking anyone to go to any hassle, but given that Youtube channels earn money per view, and that once clicked onto Google will register the channel as something I'm interested in and use it to influence ads and content recommendations, it would be nice to have some basic sight of who it is we're being invited to endorse and fund when people post Youtube links. Sadly, there is no function on Proboards for this that I'm aware of. Re-the effects of clicking on something you don't like, firstly, I would always recommend using an ad-blocker. That, however, will only affect things your end. You would still be adding to the views at Youtube's end. While not practical from here, in general, if you want to visit a website and limit their visitor tally, go through one of the bigger proxy sites. This is the same principle as the now defunct 'do not link' site worked under - rather than registering you as a unique visitor, the site will register the same IP as everyone else who used the same proxy. I find proxysite.com/ very good. Thanks for clarifying Mark - worth checking. Appreciate the tips on hiding myself but my consideration is actually the opposite - I quite like what I get from the google algorithms on the devices I use for UKPR2, it means I regularly get served with news stories on an array of subjects of fairly niche interest that I just wouldn't have time to seek out myself, and/or from sources it wouldn't occur to me to look for. And I don't want to confuse that by frequently clicking on random stuff and then immediately going "nah" and closing the window again. steve - cheers for any content names you do throw in alongside your youtube links (and the same for anyone else linking from youtube), for what it's worth it does make me more likely to actually click and watch your stuff if I know where I'm going first. I appreciate what you say about only posting from reputable news sources but whilst I agree Novara Media do sometimes fill a valuable gap in mainstream coverage, the other day I found myself on MSNBC.com because of you, so there are clearly limits!

Those interested in EU enlargement (regardless of whether England becomes an aspirant member) may wish to be aware of the developing nature of EU membership requirements.
While, parochial interests still dominate in (all parts of) the UK and will mean a lengthy absence for all remaining in UK, early (re-)accession would seem to provide the maximum degree of flexibility - (so Starmer can fuck off!)

Anent the Empire
Scots did well out of it, but the reality that it was nasty exploitation is increasingly recognised. We can't change the past but we can recognise our part in it, and make some attempt to make some redress for the worst of our involvement.
Across all the European empires the institutions, that so greatly benefitted from the wealth that slavery and imperialism created, need to start paying back for what created their status.
Alternatively, there are those who still argue that being exploited by their empire was a beneficence to "less developed peoples". May they rot in hell.

I assume this is a reference to the rather amusing time when a mulleted thug threw an egg in his face from about 2 foot and Prescott just turned round and decked him. Yes, but the changed nickname didnt catch on at the time. Its peculiar how it has been resurrected now. Well Trevor has and he speaks a bizarre language all of his own

If so, why?

The EU didn't even exist in the 1970s It is deeply disingenuous of you to keep stating such as this, which while technicaly corect because it has changed names, is fundamentally FALSE. The EU is much more the same now to then than it is different. 1957 treaty of Rome, wikipedia, "The treaty proposed the progressive reduction of customs duties and the establishment of a customs union. It proposed to create a single market for goods, labour, services, and capital across member states. It also proposed the creation of a Common Agriculture Policy, a Common Transport Policy and a European Social Fund and established the European Commission. " I dont think it had a parliament in 1970. Is it the extra direct democracy which has been added since then that you object to?

News starting to talk about China REDUCING interest rates, not raising them. Behind this seems to be a collapse of the property market. Which is what central banks seemed very worried about in the UK and west in 2008, but hardly a peep now. News did mention property prices coming to market down 2% on a month ago here in uk.
Meanwhile another item talked about the growing indebtedness of local authorities, and how most are now in difficulty with many risking insolvency in the next few years. A lovely legacy for the next government to sort out as central government has basically borrowed by passing debt to local authorities through under funding to meet their statutory duties.
Update item stated government intends to review the situation in the future, so essentially confirming it is hiding the issue until after the election.
