Re Mid Beds. Current Betting Odds on Betfair give Labour a 43.5% chance of winning with the Tories on 30% and the LDs on 28%.

We had a knock on the door today from our local tory MP, David Johnstone (Wantage). I was on a work call so couldn't answer but my wife did and politely told him she was busy with work and took leaflets. It's a good job I didn't answer or he'd have been there some time, not least because one of the leaflets was effectively encouraging people to oppose 20 mph speed limits one of which we are currently trying to get for our village and which will make my daughter's walk to the school bus stop down a narrow pavement much safer. I'd also have pointed out the small EU flag in the front window and asked him if he thought there was a cat's chance in hell of me voting for him.
The other leaflet was all about him as our local MP and was notable for the fact that the word 'Conservative' the tory logo or any indication he was anything other than an independent were entirely absent.
My wife said she found him every inch the rural tory, haughty, unsmiling and with a disinterested air.

With YouGov finally up to date with their tables, I've calculated my usual cross-break analysis for their past 10 polls stretching back to 26 July. -------- I have not anlysed the Scotland or Wales cross-breaks, as their is better data in full Scottish and Welsh polls. Agreed, but FWIW, the 6 poll YG crossbreak average at the end of September (difference from 2019 GE in brackets) stands at -
SNP 37% (-8) : SGP 7% (+6) Lab 27% (+8) : LD 8% (-2) Con 16% (-9) : REFUK 4% (+4)

Yet another example of someone who struggles with the concept of time. 2% in 2022!! What year are we in?? Don't we have a massive backlog of claims??? I don't know what the CURRENT % of people saying that they are LGBTQQIA❄️🦄🧜🏾♀️++ in order to hope to pass an asylum seeker test is, but if people insist on quoting OLD data for CURRENT issues then expect to be ignored. While 2022 is hardly old/out of date, according to Channel 4 news, the latest annual figures have this figure at 1,300 asylum seekers. Many in this cagetgory being from Nigeria, where homosexuality is illegal, punishable by up to 14 years in prison and even possible execution. Nigeria is also a former British colony where a fair few people speak English. Could you please post links for your sources (and same applies to other people). The last 'annual figure' for a full year being 2022 data. I've no idea why you highlight 'a fair few people speak English' as being relevant. I can appreciate that is a 'pull' reason why some people would PREFER to come to UK than one of the safe countries they pass through to get to UK (assuming they are paying a criminal gang to escape Nigeria or wherever). If the criteria to claim asylum in UK (rather than elsewhere) is speaking English then how many millions of people would that cover? Could you highlight where in the UN Refugee Convention 1951* it mentions that speaking English is relevant Nigeria has a population of over 200million. If 10% are LBGT+** that is 20million people. Do you think we should let that number of people claim asylum in UK? Yes/No. * www.unhcr.org/uk/about-unhcr/who-we-are/1951-refugee-convention** By all means use a lower %. Below state 9% global average for 'not hetrosexual' but 3% for LGH (see p9) www.ipsos.com/sites/default/files/ct/news/documents/2021-06/LGBT%20Pride%202021%20Global%20Survey%20Report_3.pdf

Anyone know why Fox isn't being prosecuted by the way? He is a bloody disgrace. I made a point of tracking it down on Youtube and watching it soon after, and while a mixture of dumbly stupid and horribly misogynistic I doubt there was anything illegal. More depressing was the 800 comments underneath almost all supporting Fox for 'telling it like it is' or victim blaming Ms Evans ('she deserved it for what she's said in the past).

A #nobrainer IMO and something the 'collective' have suggested before (comparing NHS service to serving the country in the Armed Forces*)
Write off** student loans to stop NHS staff leaving in England, experts saywww.bbc.co.uk/news/health-66939864Popular with the peeps as well: * Various but for RAF then 12yrs + 4yrs in reserves. Not directly comparable of course but the principle is similar See pt7, p2: recruitment.raf.mod.uk/recruitment/media/4613/20220314-pam-air-429-apr-22.pdf** IIRC I suggest 'write-down' by years of service which is pretty much the same thing. Whether it is a 'loan' or requirement to 'buy-out' if the minimum service criteria is not completed is an important detail BUT it is different to the current approach.

Then why dont you do something about it? And pay enough money to state schools so that they give an equal quality of education to private schools? Its not the rich preventing this happen (well ok, con are the party of the rich and you can see why they arent interested in properly funding schools). Its the labour party, the only potential party representing the poor or even the middle of society who could change what you object to and fund schools properly. Taking away a good education from 7% of the population does not help the 93% which the state is responsible for. All it does is hide the fact the state is performing so badly by removing the comparison showing what could be done. Its very arguable that abolishing private education would mostly have the effect of hiding how badly the state system does, and thats why politicians would seek to do it. The reallly rich, of course will be unaffected by measures like this, its the refugees from the state system who can barely afford private fees who will lose out from this, and their kids suffer.
Do you really believe that the State has the means to provide all pupils with an education comparable to Eton? Apparently you believe it doesnt, from which it must follow that you believe it is not possible for the UK to give all its children an education of that quality. You do not believe it is possible to do what you earlier said you wanted to do, "There is a great deal wrong with it when the social and educational effects are so detrimental to the vast majority of other kids whose parents lack the means to buy such advantage. Some of us of a left of centre disposition take the view that Education - Medical Care - and Justice should not be available on 'an ability to pay' basis. " So, you do not believe it is possible to give all kids an education of that quality, and therefore you would ban ANYONE getting an education of that quality? Isnt that rather crazy? I mean, if you believe at all that people should be allowed to have private wealth and spend it on what they want? For example, buying a better education for their kids? Indeed, if you believe that we educate kids not for their good but for the good of society as a whole, then isnt it always better that a few get educated even when its impossible for the many to get the same? Actually, I am certain that if labour had been in government for the last 13 years instead of con, then state schools would today be in much better shape. We would not now be in a wage crisis because of 13 years cutting state employee wages. We would have a better quality cadre of teachers. We would have dealt with the crumbling concrete years ago. It seems to me that private education has in recent years enjoyed something of a comeback compared to 50 years ago when I was being educated. Then at least the perception was lots of private schools closing, becaue the state was doing a much better job than it had been. Then we had 17 years of conservative government, which ran down the state schools. Probably abolishing grammars didnt help, because while they were arguably elitist, I mean thats kinda the point, a meritocratic elite such as Heath, Wilson, Thatcher, they were very effective schools delivering at standards to rival private schools. There are indeed some very good state schools even now. But also some really awful ones, and as a parent you are not allowed to choose where your child goes. So you are saying that if the state has dictated your child must attend one of the bad state schools, then you will be forbidden to opt to send them to a private school instead, to give them a decent chance - a chance you say should be available for all? So whats your stance on parents buying homes next to good state schools so they can buy their kids advantage that way? Are you going to ban that too? Because there are many more people doing that than going fully private. Arent they cheating even more, because they are stealing state resources to benefit their kids at the expense of someone elses kids, not funding a private place outside the state system?

🤣🤣🤣 Did you even bother to read/listen to her speech? Pretty clear that "Ben Quinn Political correspondent" at the Groan didn't. I'll quote Braverman: "Uncontrolled immigration, inadequate integration, and a misguided dogma of multiculturalism have proven a toxic combination for Europe over the last few decades...Multiculturalism makes no demands of the incomer to integrate. It has failed because it allowed people to come to our society and live parallel lives in it. They could be in the society but not of the society"Use 'find' and the term 'multiculturalism' in the text for the full speech: conservativehome.com/2023/09/26/it-is-incumbent-upon-politicians-to-ask-whether-the-refugee-convention-is-fit-for-our-modern-age-bravermans-speech-in-america-full-text/That can sit quite comfortably with a view that: "“I think that this is something that is incredible about this country, is that it is a fantastic multicultural democracy" Specific examples? People like Rishi, Braverman, Khan, etc. People of multiple cultures who have INTEGRATED. Whilst I wouldn't describe mercian as my 'bestie' then I would agree with points he has made in the past and paraphrase: Some multicultural people have failed to integrate to British society and maintain a culture that is not compatible with a liberal society like UK. Of perhaps you agree with the 'half' in the below:
Half of all British Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal, poll findswww.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/apr/11/british-muslims-strong-sense-of-belonging-poll-homosexuality-sharia-law"Trevor Phillips, the former head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said the findings were “extremely worrying” as they suggested on many issues Muslims were “nation within a nation”.
He called for a more “muscular approach” to integration."I've no idea why this is difficult for some people to understand. SOME people from different cultures have integrated (as Rishi points out) and SOME haven't (as Braverman points out). PS Before some troll tries to accuse me of Islamophobia then I was merely picking one religion whose ancient text (Qur'an) is.. well, let's just say 'out of date' and leave it at that. I appreciate some other religions are not exactly 'tolerant' of homosexuality and IMO people who hold such views have not integrated into British society and are hence an example of how multiculturalism has failed. Obviously that doesn't apply to ALL Muslims. wikiislam.net/wiki/Qur%27an,_Hadith_and_Scholars:Homosexuality

Yes, CON cabinet has lots of BAME people - legal immigrants who have INTEGRATED into British society. Braverman herself being a 'second generation' immigrant whose parents LEGALLY immigrated to Britain in the 1960s (ie decades before the problems of the modern era) I happened to listen to some music by Flanders and Swann today, who were active performing their own satirical songs 1956-1967. Amongst them is 'Song of Patriotic prejudice' www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4zyfwtDIHEThe English, the English, the English are best I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest! The rottenest bits of these islands of ours We've left in the hands of three unfriendly powers Examine the Irishman, Welshman or Scot You'll find he's a stinker, as likely as not Och aye, awa' wi' yon Edinburgh Festival! The Scotsman is mean, as we're all well aware And bony and blotchy and covered with hair He eats salted porridge, he works all the day And he hasn't got bishops to show him the way! The English, the English, the English are best I wouldn't give tuppence for all of the rest! Ah hit me old mother over the head with a shillelagh The Irishman now our contempt is beneath He sleeps in his boots and he lies in his teeth He blows up policemen, or so I have heard And blames it on Cromwell and William the Third! The English are noble, the English are nice And worth any other at double the price! Ah, iechyd da! The Welshman's dishonest, he cheats when he can And little and dark, more like monkey than man He works underground with a lamp in his hat And he sings far too loud, far too often, and flat! And crossing the Channel, one cannot say much For the French or the Spanish, the Danish or Dutch The Germans are German, the Russians are red And the Greeks and Italians eat garlic in bed! The English are moral, the English are good And clever and modest and misunderstood! And all the world over, each nation's the same They've simply no notion of playing the game They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won And they practise beforehand, which ruins the fun! The English, the English, the English are best So up with the English and down with the rest! It's not that they're wicked or naturally bad It's knowing they're foreign that makes them so mad! For the English are all that a nation should be, And the flower of the English are Donald, Michael, Donald, Michael, And Me! What intrigued me listening to recodings from their shows was that actually gay issues didnt seem to feature at all in their commentary on society. Probably because it was so deeply hidden still at the time they were performing. It wasnt even in the public consciousness and not semi-legalised until 1967.
Its quite a paradox how we managed to integrate Braverman's ancestors at a time prejudice was a lot more deeply ingrained in British society, and yet she believes we are unable to do so now.
Something which is however quite common is recent immigrants seeking to pull up the drawbridge behind them. They came to the Uk because they wanted to grab a share of British wealth, and do not want competition.

I wrote " in principal" for the explicit purpose of excluding any suggestion that the remarks of Fox and pjw are a precise parallel. I may have misunderstood Fox's purpose, but I took it to be the demeaning of the views and opinions of the lady he attacked, because she is a woman. So it ocurred to me that in choosing a woman whose views have in the past been subject to some derisory comment, rather than for example , one of the men on the BBC list , pjw may have been guilty of the same prejudice as Fox. But im pleased to see that he had no such purpose and chose Ms Daly purely at random. I thank him for the explanation. I fear this is torturous and disingenuous poppycock. I think you probably mean "tortuous". I couldnt care less what you think. Its the truth.

There are some great interviewers on local radio It seems he risks being viewed as a prat. An interesting parallel was in the news from Germany, where they have now agreed a new EU policy for allocating migrants within the EU. This in turn has happened because of various political rows including one rather similar to the UK over deadlines for decarbonisation. Anyway, in particular details of a new proposal to bring in deadlines got leaked and caused an uproar amongst voters. This was eventually smoothed over but seems to have contributed to the government needing to placate voters, so there has been an internal row between coalition partners leading to agreement over immigrants. Anyway, they got into trouble because their policy got leaked before they were ready. One might wonder who leaked Sunak's plans to discontinue HS2. And its obvious thats the plan, otherwise he would say so.

Surprise, surprise! Police officers widely misusing body-worn cameras www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-66809642Police officers are switching off their body-worn cameras when force is used, as well as deleting footage and sharing videos on WhatsApp. A BBC investigation has uncovered more than 150 reports of camera misuse by forces in England and Wales - described as "shocking" by a leading officer. In one case, siblings faced a two-year legal battle over footage showing officers' use of force against them.I think it was Sir Robert Mark, who said that a good police force caught more criminals than it employed. It seems that too many of our police think they are above the law. One of the siblings said their legal teams compared notes, and found the police had selectively included in each case only the parts of video which made that accused look bad. Unfortunately for the police when put back together the whole of what they then had available looked much worse for the police. Readers here may remember another case where a woman was stopped in her car and then police smashed in her window. Apparently that is normal policy. Anyway, police published what was supposed to be a bodycam tape of events...only it had edited out the section where the policeman smashed her window. But on another piece from a different officer you could hear her scream when the first did it. Either Steve or someone came to the defence of the police who seemed to have denied smashing the window or interfering with the tape, or something. I dont quite remember the details. Anyway, they had obviously edited the bodycam material to make them look better. Isnt that fraud, deception for personal gain?

The hospitalisation rate was 3%, which is alarmingly high, but relatively meaningless at this point as it was a single patient from 30 infections, so not really a statistically valid sample. There are some reports from elsewhere of high levels of severe cases (Ohio apparently has 6 hospitalised cases of Pirola in under 60s with no previous health conditions, but vax status unknown) but these are not yet coherent evidence sources. We're in wait and see territory, but it is heartening to see some NHS trusts moving to bring mask mandates back in clinical areas. The reason the world locked down for covid in a futile attempt to stop spread was exactly because the world proceeded on inadequate data of the sort you are posting now. The chinese reported 100 very ill people in hospital, many of them expected to die. It was assumed this would be true of the world population, which was utter nonsense. Surely thats a drop in the ocean compared to medical staff who have died from all sorts of diseases. Its an occupational hazard. I suspect based again on very limited sample, that many people who work in hospitals have a personal interest in some disease, or some past experience which made them want to help others. More or less reported doctors are the group in the Uk who have lost more income than any other during the recent block of conservative government.

From the Guardian - BBC partially gags presenters on major 'non-news' shows. News was already covered: "The small number of presenters in this category will have their ability to share political views severely restricted while their BBC programme is on air. They will also have to stay quiet on party politics for a two-week period before and after the series has been broadcast. The full list of BBC programmes and the presenters affected by the new rules are: Antiques Roadshow – Fiona Bruce The Apprentice – Lord Sugar Dragons’ Den – Evan Davis The One Show – Alex Jones Presenters of major events, such as sporting events MasterChef – John Torode and Gregg Wallace Match of the Day – Gary Lineker and Mark Chapman Strictly Come Dancing – Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman Top Gear’s current presenters Radio 1 – Greg James Radio 2 – Zoë Ball, Vernon Kay and Scott Mills These presenters will be banned from endorsing or criticising a political party, criticising the character of individual politicians in the UK, commenting on any issue that is a matter of political debate during an election period, and taking up an official role assisting or fundraising for campaigning groups. They will be free to engage in such activity when their programmes are off air" This would seem to suggest that Gary Linker was absoutely correct at the time he was suspended, that he had a perfect contractual right to say whatever he liked.

Unlike a lot of these cases I can't see any benefit to anyone from this- traditionally it's for a view of the river or a property developer wanting to build on something with protected status. This just looks like a very nasty person who just wants a headline or frustrated at traffic or something. Maybe the council wanted to redevelop the area?

They came to the Uk because they wanted to grab a share of British wealth, and do not want competition. I remember watching them live on TV (it was all live back then). There was a strong self-deprecating tone to English/Scottish/British comedy in the 1950s - an ability to laugh at (and send up) one's own perceived characteristics and foibles. I suspect that interacting with lots of others in wartime had something to do with that.
You are wrong that "homosexuality" wasn't "in the public consciousness". Of course, it was. It just wasn't called "gay" back then, and sexual issues were not raised in the media till the 60s (if you ignore the coded reports in the News of the World!)
Since "British wealth" was largely ripped off from the rest of the world - especially India - taking back some of those ill-gotten gains seems eminently reasonable.

More evidence of Braverman's lies and stoking up hatred www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/braverman-ethnicity-child-grooming-gangs-false-mail-on-sundaySuella Braverman falsely claimed child grooming gangs in the UK were “almost all British-Pakistani”, according to a ruling by the press regulator, Ipso... Ipso has forced the Mail on Sunday to issue an apology and correction to Braverman’s piece after concluding the statement was false. The regulator said Braverman’s decision to link “the identified ethnic group and a particular form of offending was significantly misleading” because the Home Office’s own research had concluded offenders were mainly from white backgrounds'

Xenophobic loon Braverman and the rest of team clown car now seem to be labouring under the misconception that the council of Europe needs us more than we need them. What struck me was how leaving the EU was a necessary first step in abolishing human rights within the UK.

No doubt, more will emerge in due course, but it seems a little hard to believe that a 16 year old would walk a mile or more, carrying a big chainsaw, and have the skill to make such a professional job of felling the tree.

A small landmark for my (and YouGov's) favourite tracker question - "In hindsight, do you think Britain was right or wrong to vote to leave the EU?". This week's YG poll marks the 250th time they have asked the same question, going back to 2 August 2016, when a net 4% thought it was 'right' (46/42) totally in line with the result of the referendum itself. These days, though, the typical result is a net 23% for 'wrong' (32/55), as seen in the poll released today, and several others recently. The YouGov poll of 26-27 Sept also completes the ninth successive calendar quarter in which the majority for 'Wrong to Leave' has grown. Here are the quarter-by-quarter averaged net results and movements for the past 3 years. Jan-Mar 21 (11 polls) Net 'Wrong' : 4.6% Apr-June 21 (8 polls) Net 'Wrong': 2.5% (-2.1) July-Sept 21 (7 polls) Net 'Wrong': 6.4% (+3.9) Oct-Dec 21 (8 polls) Net 'Wrong' : 9.8% (+3.4) Jan-Mar 22 (5 polls) Net Wrong: 10.6% (+0.8) Apr-June 22 (7 polls) Net Wrong: 11.2% (+0.6) July-Sept 22 (8 polls) Net Wrong: 15.5% (+4.3) Oct-Dec 22 (10 polls) Net Wrong: 18.9% (+3.4) Jan-Mar 23 (8 polls) Net Wrong: 20.6% (+1.7) Apr-June 23 (10 polls) Net Wrong: 22.1% (+1.5) July-Sept 23 (8 polls) Net Wrong: 23.4% (+1.3) Most of the movements we have seen to this tracker reflect the changing narrative around Brexit. There was a 9.8% lead for 'Wrong' in the 4th quarter of 2020, but this was reduced to just a few points in the 'vacccine-bounce' of mid-2021. By the end of 2021, that 9 point lead was back again as 'partygate' broke. And the growth in the 'Wrong' lead in the final quarter of 2022 matches up with the chaos of the Truss era - although the impact on the 'hindsight' question was far less dramatic than on Voting Intention polls. To me, the most interesting thing is what has happened since that 4th quarter of 2022. The lead for 'Wrong' has continued to grow steadily -by a total of 4.5%. This has happened during a period when the Conservatives have reduced their polling defecit by about 5 points, and the signing of the 'Windsor framework'. And with support for Brexit now very concentrated into the 65+ age-group (who have moved far less than all other groups) it is likely that age-demographics alone will continue to move opinion towards 'Wrong to Leave' - this in itself is adding a little over 1% per annum to 'Wrong'. www.whatukthinks.org/eu/questions/in-highsight-do-you-think-britain-was-right-or-wrong-to-vote-to-leave-the-eu/?pollster%5B0%5D=yougov

"Sunak expected to limit powers of councils in England to curb car use Exclusive: Potential plan to restrict measures such as 20mph speed limits"
At around 30mph a road traffic collision with a pedestrian is like being hit by a 3.5 tonne elephant or a fall from the third floor.
Around 50% of children hit by a vehicle at 30mph die.
At 20 mph the figure is less than 5%
To win votes our prime minister is going to kill children.
Think about that and then vote these fuckers out.

In fairness not every tory is happy with his making up policy on the hoof,
