You are being disingenuous there in pretending this happened because usage changes over the time. The phrase you used was always derogatory and understood as such even 50 years ago (I remember), and you followed it with a generalisation about that entire community. I don't think you are stupid and I think you know all that perfectly well. It is in the same category as a whole bunch of other descriptions of various groups which were commonly used in the 1970s and before (again I remember) but which always carried an insulting/dismissive connotation. I am sure you can imagine the ones I mean. Best avoid all of those. Not sure whether you mean black or traveller? Two common english words. I'm gay. The gay community defused many words used abusively including that one by claiming ownership. yep, so what? I didn't mean either black or traveller - neither of which is racist (although traveller is inaccurate for gypsies, who prefer to be known as gypsies), but a whole other set of words that were commonplace in my youth and always carried a derogatory element. I won't repeat them all here for obvious reasons, but mercian's "gypo" was of certainly of that family, and often prefaced with a swear work. The equivalents for gay men at the time would be things like 'faggot', 'poof' and 'bender' - the latter being the most commonly used one in my school in the 70s. I wouldn't use those terms to describe a gay man and I take it you wouldn't want people on here to start doing so?

Hilarious...I expect Romanies/travellers subject to racist abuse appreciate the subtlety of it... Yeah.. A Shakespeare play was being discussed on R4 recently. He had boys playing girls pretending to be boys, falling for boys playing boys pretending to be girls. How did all that go down at court? Was he having a dig at prejudices and PC behaviour? Yep, I did wonder what you were referring to before you added the bit to your post, about Romanies. Did you just indulge in racist language by your own standards by using the words Romanies/travellers as previously complained about to decribe these people? Presumably because you couldnt think of any other way to explain who you meant? That would be a bit absurd? Roma, Romany, Traveller and Gypsy are not racist terms.

In my original post I should have said "and elsewhere". Thank you for link but I'll avoid getting into the details of "black"* beyond noting that some members of BAME or LGBTIQA+ don't like so many letters being clumped together and assumed to be one group.

I now understand why Sunak has taken no action against the racist rhetoric of Braverman, he's in full agreement with it neilj, I've been telling you that for a while. The idea that Sunak is a cuddly social liberal of the Cameron type is wrong. He is a social and well as a fiscal conservative.

The biggest problem with the illegal immigration Bill is not just that it won't work, but will have the opposite effect to what they want Those negative effects are by the by as far as they're concerned. The only purpose of all this is to energise older yobs in places like Brentwood or Chatham or Nuneaton into actually coming out to vote for them rather than staying at home. Brentwood is quite posh - Basildon, Thurrock, Harlow, I'll give you

Trevor - you are keen on asking people to prove things, so I have a challenge for you. You are obviously keen on the Rwanda policy. There are soon to be 1,700 men incarcerated at Wethersfield, with similar centres to follow in Lincolnshire and Sussex. Can you provide objective evidence (i.e. hopeful statements by Suella Braverman don't count) that Rwanda intends to accommodate many thousands of people deported from Britain? Remember that these people are already here, so talk about it acting as a deterrent is beside the point.
The reason I ask is that to me the policy looks like a culture war stunt rather than serious policy, so I would be interested if you can prove me wrong.

Hi hireton , well Johnson's regime was so blatantly corrupt on so many levels, I'm sure there is still a lot to come out.
The key question for me is the selection process and ultimate successor for Sharp - it will show if the rot is still spreading and fatal or if Sunak's regime does mark more of a return to 'acceptable' norms. My money is on the former - but would love to be proved wrong. Just a guess but Rishi might copy LAB's policy for the BBC? LAB is not my party but if someone can post LAB's policy for BBC info then 'ta muchly' "Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery" (aka 'no copyright on good ideas') www.theguardian.com/media/2022/aug/27/labour-pledges-strengthen-bbc-independence-protect-funding#:~:text=Labour%20pledges%20to%20strengthen%20the%20BBC's%20independence%20and%20protect%20funding,-This%20article%20is&text=Labour%20has%20pledged%20to%20strengthen,wage%20war%20on%20the%20corporation. Tories to leave thousands of EU laws intact in latest Brexit betrayalKemi Badenoch said to have told Eurosceptics it was impossible to remove the rulings despite Rishi Sunak’s pledge to abolish more than 4,000 “The Prime Minister gave his public backing in January to the Retained EU Law Bill, which will abolish more than 4,000 EU laws by the end of this year.
However, in a briefing to senior Tory Eurosceptic MPs on Monday, Kemi Badenoch, the Trade Secretary, said that only 20 per cent of those laws - just 800 - were likely to be scrapped by Dec 31.
The number that Mrs Badenoch is proposing to remove is smaller than the 1,400 EU laws which were found in the National Archive as part of a Whitehall hunt for needless EU laws.
Mrs Badenoch reportedly told the MPs that civil servants had told her that it was impossible to remove the 4,000 EU laws, the vast bulk of which sit in the environment department.
The hope now is that the remaining EU laws might be removed over time, however, that risks a future Labour government reversing the plans.
Conservative MPs told The Telegraph they were furious at the apparent hollowing out of the legislation which they see as a surrender to civil servants who they see as being unwilling to strip away EU red tape.”Telegraph Badenoch is a smart cookie, as she continues to demonstrate, and is not interested in posturing. Despite being a political opponent, I am quite impressed by her. Once upon a time the Conservatives liked competent ministers like her and Gove.

I'm not sure but (for the third time) I'll highlight the Equalities Act where it splits the two out - probably for a reason: "A racial group can be made up of two or more distinct racial groups, for example black Britons, British Asians, British Sikhs, British Jews, Romany Gypsies and Irish Travellers"www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/advice-and-guidance/race-discriminationTo give a different example. When in doubt, or when using a broader grouping*, people use the term 'British Asian' to include people with Pakistan, Indians, etc heritage. On the off chance people don't know the history or current issues on the Indian Subcontinent then you never want to assume someone with Pakistan heritage 'prefers' (your term) to be called Indian - or vice versa. * Which in itself is a minefield. I have some friends that might be referred to as 'British Asian' but are from the subgroup of Indian heritage and would not take kindly to be lumped in with other Asians (or BAME) and most certainly not referred to as someone with Pakistani heritage. I appreciate some people might think mercian, myself (and anyone else they think is RoC) are whatever they think we are but unless/until you find out the 'hard way' then mistakes are easy to make. Someone like Eddy/Suzy Izzard seems OK with people making a genuine mistake on what pronoun to use but some people are not so tolerant. Hence why a "woke-epedia" would be useful although perhaps even the word "Woke" or "Liberal" are not acceptable anymore?

mercian - good to see your apology. I too will apologise. I'm sorry Trevor describes himself as a twat. FFS. OK I'll give a different example. There is a band call N.W.A. (pretty good music IMO, but each to their own for musical taste) They can use the "N" word for themselves but other people can't use the "N" word to describe the members of that band. So if a LAB MP says they think they've made twats of themselves that is them speaking about themselves - it would be an insult if anyone else called them a twat/twats I'm not a LAB MP but perhaps you can highlight the "gotcha" where I've even referred to myself as a twat - you can use the "quote" function to show where and when. Mark . I've tried and offered a chance to start afresh but can you understand why I see no evidence that you moderate LoCs.

The resignation of Sharp as chairman of the BBC leaves two, perhaps more important, questions remain unanswered: A. Why did Johnson's cousin, Sam Blyth, make it to the recommeded shortlist to become Chief Executive of the British Council B. And which bank and person provided the £800,000 loan (Blyth only acted as guarantor). Hi hireton, well Johnson's regime was so blatantly corrupt on so many levels, I'm sure there is still a lot to come out.

Although it might be seen as bad news by a fair few, personally speaking I've no intention of quitting the board. It is a shame to see some regular contributors call it a day, although we can hope some of them might return. I know where @crofty lives, as they say, so there is always the possibility we could force him back. More seriously, the quality of UKPR and then UKPR2 waxes and wanes, as does the political balance. Yes, Trevor is an affected twat, albeit a twat who regularly posts polling data amongst the nonsense, but the best way to respond to twats in such a situation is to chug along doing whatever it is you enjoy doing, and not to let the twats push you off balance. If this generalist board with a general focus on polling is the kind of thing that floats your boat, I'd suggest you stick with it. You will have to sit through phases of boredom, rudeness, and the odd twat, but all things will pass, and there's usually plenty of good stuff in the mix. There was never a heyday of UKPR. That was always a myth. The board has never been balanced, just imbalanced in different ways, there were always obsessions, partisan bickering, personal animosities and the odd twat. Twas ever thus. 8 people liked the above from Alec but I won't mention names. In case people are not aware then you can 'unlike' a post by giving the 'thumbs up' a second press. You can also 'delete post' if you've said something you later realise was inappropriate - although, having been given the chance and sufficient time allowed to pass, then the "quote" function allows for a "gotcha". Caveat. People can "edit" quotes so the best thing to do is look back at the original or use the 'link' function: ukpollingreport2.proboards.com/post/81208/threadThe only change I made in the quote above, being to highlight one section in bold.

The first thing I did was read the ECC guide to the different groups that were referred to as Travellers (not always their term for themselves). It was enlightening. Apparently while all Roma are Gypsies not all Gypsies would be happy to be called Roma and both sets are quite distinct from Irish Travellers and therefore would never have used the word 'traveller' for themselves. There is (or at least was at the time) a level of hostility between the Gypsies and Irish Travellers and one of the Council's rules was to ensure that the two groups were never mixed on one site. Also all Gypsy Site Wardens were themselves Gypsies as they were suspicious of all outside authorities. The reason the term Gypsy was used was that it was the one they preferred themselves, indeed were proud of. For example see the boxer Tyson Fury's self-description as "The Gypsy King".

Those interested in tactical voting to remove the Tories at the local elections might want to look at this site, I don't think they are right in their conclusions in all instances as local factors are at play and is a tad Labour centric. it does appear a tad Labour centric for example in Dacorum which currently has 31 Tory and 19 lib dem councillors with no Labour councillors it suggests the best way of ousting the remaining Tories is a Labour vote of the 16 ward seats it suggests a Labour vote is most appropriate, 6 of these are actually lib dems targets and is in an area where lib dems have won by elections at Westminster and local government level in every single election held since 2019 stopthetories.vote/Here's Phil Moorhouse with an explainer. youtu.be/m5VMhchg_q4

There is no perception of moderator bias. Only in one posters mind, who is a self confessed twat. That's all we need to know. And to prove your description is correct (but much too polite) he is busy 'liking' the posts of people who are leaving because of him. Did pjw1961 have his account hacked? That was my albeit limited understanding of the friction between the two groups and hence why I highlighted it. Perhaps you could post a link to ECC or any other official guidelines on being able to use the collective term "Gypsy" as people I know of Irish Traveller heritage will disagree with you, if it is just "in your opinion" - those people being the ones who highlighted to me that they have different categories in the Equality Act. Since you mention boxing and 'King' then Amir Khan had/has the nickname 'King' but I would certainly not advice anyone to ever think all people from the Indian subcontinent want to re-assigned as of Pakistani heritage. You appear to have completely lost the plot. I never advocated gypsy as a collective term for all traveller communities. I said "traveller is an inaccurate term for Gypsies who prefer to be called Gypsies". Remember that this started with a specific racist reference to Gypsies, not any other traveller group.

NB I gave fair warning and only waited until both Alec and PJW felt the need to respond, not with an apology of course ( colin was correct with his prediction) and not even with an edit or delete of their own previous posts. It is obviously not for me to enforce the rules and I'm quite happy with "no rules". I merely seek clarity on whether or not the rules are ever applied as quite clearly some people are 'repeat offenders' and didn't even take the opportunity of a new thread to leave previous baggage behind.

It'll be dress codes for posters soon, you mark my words.
Wish everyone could just relax a little. Sometimes we have a bit of fun. Learn to laugh at yourself, as well as with others, was something my Granny used to say. Sound advice.

Would YOU call an employee or someone you didn't know a 'twat' (or worse) and think that was acceptable? Yes/No.

Hi lululemonmustdobetter . The other person with an increasing number of questions to answer is Simon Case, the Cabinet Secretary, who appears to be involved in almost all the the problems and either doesn't have good judgement or insufficient authority and influence to deal with them. I'm afraid Case is what happens when you politicise the civil service. Hi John Chanin , not so sure about that in regards him. When you look at Case, his background and influences (Peter Hennessy was his PhD supervisor) he himself is the the virtual epitome of the traditional civil service. I think its more an issue of judgement and in-sufficient authority.

In not remotely surprising news it appears that yet another GOP supreme court justice has serious questions to answer. Brett I like beer Kavanagh was accused at his nomination hearings of serious sexual impropriety including indecent exposure in front of a fellow Yale student Deborah Ramirez, Kavanagh denied it and a friend of his and also a member of the far right federalist society and a fellow student at the time Joseph Smith said it was a case of mistaken identity and the actual offender was a notorious " flasher" Jake Maxey who was also a student at the time was actually to blame.
The GOP debate dominated committee chose to believe this evidence and Kavanagh's nomination was confirmed.
With me so far ?
A slight problem has emerged in the defence.
Mr Maxey wasn't a student at Yale at the time, wasn't in the area and was actually still in high school.
"In an interview with the Guardian, Maxey confirmed that he was still a senior in high school at the time of the alleged incident, and said he had never been contacted by any of the Republican staffers who were conducting the investigation.
“I was not at Yale,” he said. “I was a senior in high school at the time. I was not in New Haven.” He added: “These people can say what they want, and there are no consequences, ever.”
Max Stier, who was actually a student at Yale at the time described a separate alleged incident in which he said he witnessed Kavanaugh expose himself at a party at Yale. This evidence was excluded from the final report into the nominee.
It has previously been reported that Stier wanted to tell the FBI anonymously during the confirmation process that he had allegedly witnessed Kavanaugh’s friends push the future judge’s penis into the hand of a female classmate at a party. While Republicans on the Senate committee were reportedly made aware of his desire to submit information to the FBI, he was not interviewed by the committee’s Republican investigators.
The committee’s final report claimed there was “no verifiable evidence to support” Ramirez’s claim.
Anyone assuming that Mr Maxey must be a card carrying liberal mistake it's the same Maxey who is a Republican activist and has gained prominence in conservative circles for his role in sharing a portable hard drive of data from Hunter Biden’s laptop with members of the media, including the Washington Post. When he was reached by the Guardian, Maxey said he was in Europe and claimed he had “just” given the hard drive to Viktor Orbán’s government in Hungary.
Needless to say there will be no consequences for yet another supreme court republican cipher justice who with his fellow colleagues consider themselves above the law.

And to put our little storms in teacups into some perspective, perhaps we should all be pondering the stunning, savage, record breaking sea surface temperatures currently being recorded. /photo/1
It's looking horribly like we've underestimated the rapidity of global heating. That has consequences for everyone.
