Spurs looking more spursey. Losing 2-0 to Villa at home with Kane playing as if he's still at the World Cup. One lone chance for Spurs (to Kane) in the first half which he couldn't convert and this time they haven't improved in the second half. It looks like St Totteringham's day will come early this year and I cannot see them getting into the Champions League. Will they even qualify for Europe?

It feels like a there have been a lot of deaths of exceptional footballers over the past month or so.
Rather late, because of my intermittent presence over the last six weeks or so, my claim to an extraordinary footballing moment. I saw Pele play in 1973, he was on a tour with Santos ( a benefit tour for him?) and somehow they rocked up at Plymouth Argyle. I was thirteen when I saw my local team beat a South American legend and his team (3:2 from memory.) There can't be many left who watched that match, there not being much of a culture of families attending football matches at the time, and 13 year old girls in the 40,000 crowd would have been very under represented I think.

I've just seen an Everton player go over on his ankle in the cup match v Man Utd. It was a fair tackle, he just lost his balance and he's been stretchered off. There's a lot of this sort of injury. Perhaps we can't go back to the old style boots, but some lessons could be learned. e.g. My first football boots had leather stretching up past the ankle so when they were laced up the ankle was protected. The boots they have now are little more than slippers. No wonder there are so many injuries from minor incidents.

I suspect that if you gave the same player an old-style boot and a new-style 'slipper' they would be able to run faster in the latter. Reducing the ability to bend the ankle must affect one's ability to run.

leftieliberalYou're probably right. It's a bit of a trade-off. Anyway, for some reason I've been reading Brian Clough quotes. This is one I hadn't heard before which amused me: "βI donβt speak foreign languages. I find F*** off is understood by pretty much anyone.β"

Frank Lampard sacked by Everton: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63610629I cannot say that I am surprised, nor that both Frank Lampard and Stephen Gerrard, both of whom I would count among the finest of English midfielders, have shown themselves not great as managers. It is quite rare that great players subsequently become great managers.

It is quite rare that great players subsequently become great managers. Yes. I go back to Stanley Matthews and he had a go managing Port Vale I believe but didn't do much. Brian Clough was a very good player but mainly in the second division. Ferguson did play for his country but only a few times, like Clough. Mourinho had a limited playing career but was a great manager. There are exceptions of course. Cruyff for example.

Forest back where they belong. (and Villa doing OK too). Spurs being spursy too, losing 4-1 to Leicester today. Wolves with another away win, so its good news for the Midlands clubs. We will have to see tomorrow whether Villa can keep up the momentum.

The mighty Wolves are pulling themselves back up from the bottom of the Premier league One nil down after 30 minutes with a player sent off they managed to win 2-1 I think it was even more impressive than their 3-0 win against Liverpool last week Bring on Bournemouth

I must congratulate St Helens in winning the World Club challenge against Penrith Panthers in a thrilling game in NSW. www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/feb/18/penrith-panthers-st-helens-world-club-challenge-rugby-league-match-reportI missed the start and last few minutes (Sat shopping trip), so I cannot be sure if the Guardian report is a little too rosy. But on what I saw, Saints were playing well in their usual style, and Roby at hooker (for 500-plus games at No 9) was doing so well for a 37-year-old. It`s good for once that we can match Australia at RL, despite not having the cash for our UK clubs to compete with the better-attended Australian clubs.

7-0, Liverpool are back! Admittedly Manure were having a real stinker, but what really impressed me watching on MOTD2 was the way that Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo combined. It was if it took a bit of time after Gakpo's arrival for them all the get used to playing together, but now they are really playing like we all expected. I could see them getting on a 10-match winning run as long as those three stay fit. The title is a step too far, but I expect to see them no lower than third. See www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64857544 for Phil McNulty's take.

538's predictions for the Premier League projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/premier-league/I think I would rate Arsenal's chances of winning the title a bit above 55% I agree about their top four, although I think that Liverpool/ManUtd will be much tighter (and I still think Liverpool will be ahead). I don't think they have fully taken account of that 7-0 on the psychology of both clubs' players. As for the relegation places, I think that both Bournemouth and Southampton lack the class to stay in the Premier League but I still fancy Everton to finish above both Leeds and Notts Forest.

A spectacular winger`s try for Scotland this afternoon.
But we get them nearly every week when we watch St Helens. Tommy Makinson can do the one-handed stuff on either wing, with legs flying to avoid the touch line

Who will be relegated from the Premier League? www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64985188My prediction is for Leeds to take the third relegation place along with Southampton and Bournemouth. Neilsen Gracenote have Forest going down, but I think their home form will keep them up. Leeds fixtures: 1 Apr Arsenal (a), 4 Apr Nottingham Forest (h), 9 Apr Crystal Palace (h), 17 Apr Liverpool (h), 22 Apr Fulham (a), 25 Apr Leicester (h), 30 Apr Bournemouth (a), 7 May Manchester City (a), 13 May Newcastle (h), 20 May West Ham (a), 28 May Tottenham (h) Forest fixtures: 1 Apr Wolves (h), 4 Apr Leeds (a), 8 Apr Aston Villa (a), 16 Apr Manchester United (h), 22 Apr Liverpool (a), 26 Apr Brighton (h), 29 Apr Brentford (a), 8 May Southampton (h), 13 May Chelsea (a), 20 May Arsenal (h), 28 May Crystal Palace (a) I would expect to see Forest getting three points each from Wolves, Brighton and Southampton, perhaps one from Arsenal (h) who will be 'on the beach' having already won the title and at worst needing to get a point away at Crystal Palace on the last day of the season to stay up. Leeds could very easily lose all their last four games, meaning they need 10 points from 7 games to stay up.
