I am sorry to hear that news Old Nat, but I am sure you will make the best of things.
But for everyone here (And I really mean 100% on this new board), a very happy and safe Xmas.
It`s a hard frost in the NE of Scotland, but that bodes well for an outing in the sun tomorrow with a sighting of snowy mountains.

Bloody virus! Daughter in law has tested positive.
Sorry about that.
Tonight I've been pinged from the 23rd Dec (sat next to my boss with a screen between).
I've triple vaccinated and have no symptoms, but need to test for seven days now.
A big question mark over visiting my mum on Boxing Day (she's 82).
I've tested myself negative on a LFT, but will probably do the safe thing and not go.
I guess this year there will be some late Christmas gatherings. I suspect by the time we go back to work, there will be a huge spike in cases.

Bantams
As long as Mrs Nat and I, and daughter & family all test negative tomorrow morning, we can get together, and go round to son's flat and wave to them from the car park.
As Davwel suggests we'll make the best of things. Main thing is to hope that d-in-l only has a mild infection.

You're the second poster on here today facing this from far from perfect last minute situation. We're going to my daughter's tomorrow, our niece can't go as her partner has tested positive. It's rife. Anyway, try to stay safe.

I'd like to add my best wishes to everyone for a safe, peaceful and merry Christmas. Special thanks to Mark for rescuing us, and AW for tolerating us for so long.
And to everyone with covid, or whose plans are affected by family members with it, my thoughts are with you and hope everyone makes a full and speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear that oldnat and catmanjeff among others have a spoiled Christmas. Dr A and myself are set for a quiet festive period, with a turkey for two. Tonight we have some light, wispy snow falling, as the temperatures dip away, with snow warnings in place for Boxing Day. Would add my thoughts to all of those applauding the start of the UKPR2 era. I'd like to leave you all with a present of a link to George Monbiot's latest column for the Grunge - www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/dec/24/dead-goldfish-licensed-waste-disposer-system-falling-apartI know he isn't to everyone's taste, and this is, as ever from Monbiot, very political, but I urge everyone to read it, mainly because amongst the politics, it has a very funny story at it's heart. He describes how he has registered his childhood pet goldfish, long since decased, as an Upper Tier Waste Handler on the Environment Agency's register of licensed waste handlers. Monbiot did this to make a point about how after 10 years of savage cuts, the government has effectively given up regulating waste, which explains the plague of illegal dumping, some of it on a literally industrial scale. This is how democracies subside - not by overt and open deconstruction of state functions, but by the quiet withdrawal of activity from state agencies away from public view. It doesn't happen by accident, and as Monbiot says, deregulation ultimately leads to a gangster economy. Deregulation is sold politically as a way of setting citizens free, but we learned long ago that protection of citizens is what frees us from the conmen and criminals, a lesson now largely forgotten.

Thanks. Fortunately, we can deliver Xmas dinner to them - having stocked the freezer with this circumstance in mind. Planning some Zoom pressie openings tomorrow. The adults had all envisaged the possibility, but both sets of kids are really upset, having eagerly anticipated seeing their cousins.

I don't know whether PHS just don't trust the private testing companies that the UK licensed for private covid testing, but all 4 of the US family have been told to get another PCR test at an NHS site tomorrow morning. We'll see what comes of that.
In the meantime, Merry Xmas to all those on UKPR2.

I mentioned the possibility lateral flow tests might be less sensitive to omicron.
In general though it looks like the dire warnings of a fortnight ago have failed to happen. doesn't stop government from continuing to make them. That's pretty much been true now for two years. Covid had never anywhere reached its predicted potential for harm.
Zoe result of R maximum 1.5 in London is very instructive, that's about a three week doubling time. It's perfectly true the rise amongst an age subset of the population is much faster, but similar effects must have happened in previous waves. Comparing like for like on national figures, this wave has not risen faster than others in the past.
On the other hand, Zoe reports symptomatic cases and estimates asymptomatic. The figures posted here from Ferguson yesterday showed 50% asymptomatic positive test cases, and that has to be an under estimate both because the results being biased by people only testing if they have symptoms, and tests failing to detect mild cases. This is something of a rise in on officially accepted proportion of asymptomatic cases and is a further indication of increasing mildness. But could account for some discrepancy between the surveys. However I don't see a huge rise in asymptomatic cases as cause for concern!
Thus far all the information mirrors what happened in SA resulting in yet milder outcome than delta, which itself was not sufficiently severe to have warranted all this intervention had the first outbreak been as mild as delta.
Someone who got a booster this week advised the staff there didn't seem to have enough customers to keep them busy. Which was quite odd because I checked the booking site which failed to report any vacancies for a fortnight. Perhaps that's why they didn't have enough customers if those vacancies weren't being reported.

Seasons Greetings to all.
Another negative LFT this morning, so far so good.
Even if we have to isolate, we've got a freezer full of food and a full bottle of Cardhu whisky and another of Highland Park whisky to keep us going.
Be safe, have fun!

I should be with a group of friends sunbathing in the Isle of Wight but that was scuppered a couple of days ago by Uncle Omicron. Can't even ride my bike as a psychiatrist in a Smart car knocked me off it a couple of weeks ago leaving me with fractures in both arms. Quite a lot of zooming around and a visit from daughter will compensate (with ample lubrication), plus some Shanks' pony activities. Merry Christmas to all and thanks to Father Mark and Grandfather AW - this site has great promise.

Morning all, hope everyone is having a good Xmas, esp. those with the Covid thing to deal with. Just a quick post to mention that there’s a Christmas Day launch of the James Webb satellite in a couple of hours, which is of some significance. To quote the BBC… “The biggest space telescope ever conceived is scheduled to go into orbit in the coming hours.
The $10bn James Webb Space Telescope will be launched on a European Ariane rocket from French Guiana.
It's a project that has taken 30 years to design and build and is regarded as one of the grand scientific endeavours of the 21st Century.
Webb's goal will be to try to image the very first stars and galaxies to shine in the Universe.
It will also have the power to probe the atmospheres of distant planets to look for gases that might hint at the presence of life.”So no pressure then… www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-59782057

merry christmas one and all.
The good news today is South Africa has decided to discontinue testing and isolating because there is no point.
The country received hopefully it's final vaccination against covid from the omicron wave which will have given them updated immunity against the latest strain. Likely rather better than obsessive re vaccination with an out dated vaccine.
Shame the UK chose to cancel Christmas instead of us too seeing an end to covid this festive season.
Politicians have an awful lot to answer for. I only hope those trying to keep this epidemic going for years longer than it need did so for humanitarian reasons rather than malign, or simply hoping to get rich from the disruption.
