So Musk is supposed to be reforming government efficiency and there is talk of slashing the costs by two trillion dollars. Some Telegraph commenters think it won’t go well and he will resign and blame others. What do you think? Feel free to explain in the comments!

What Musk has achieved is awe inspiring but he started with clean sheets and real power / control in the areas he chose. Saving government money will come up against the vested interests and power of civil servants and they will grind him down as indeed they did when we tried similar "businessmen into government" approaches here.
My bet is that he gets frustrated by endless obstruction and then walks.

"or what" I think. Most likely Trump will sideline him, and he'll go and concentrate on something else. Two gigantic egos can't but fall out sooner rather than later.

He possibly avoided quite a lot of resistance by sacking a whole lot of people, so there weren’t so many left to resist and the remainder were rather busy. Twitter isn’t government though…

Yes, I think that’s not an uncommon view. I think they like to see themselves as deal makers though, but Trump gets through quite a few people. I think he’s indicated that this time he is getting better people, but judging by comments elsewhere on the board I’m not sure everyone else would agree! I am interested to see how far Musk’s skills in other areas can go in government…

Seems none of the above. He will save more than a trivial amount but with significant pain and not the target amount. However, he could very well simply walk out, not least because trump seems very good at falling out with his cabinet.

I can't think of many examples where Billionaire Businessmen have made a happy transition into Government, it is a good idea for Politicians to have a hinterland, but I don't think that is the same thing as being a Maverick iconoclast. the skill sets are different Musk is also rather thin skinned, remember the Spat over the Thailand cave rescue, and I recall another Occasion when he was booed and heckled at a conference he appeared quite shocked and rattled.
If he really wants to cut 2 trillion dollars from Govt. (a ludicrous proposal) he is going to get some serious blowback when this costs scores of American lives as it surely will. The shine will come off the tech genius then, and i think he will walk.

(Still, if he’s going to set up a big colony on Mars, he might need to learn to handle public services etc.)

c-a-r-f-r-e-w - it's less shedding jobs at twitter, more shredding value. It's worth a fraction what it was when he bought it, such has been the mismanagement This is of interest for this thread though - www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/nov/23/we-live-in-a-climate-of-fear-graphic-novelists-elon-musk-book-cant-find-uk-or-us-publisherI was struck with this line - "Cunningham said: “Knowing what I know about the man, my conclusion is that it’s incredible that such a mediocre figure can amass such wealth, but it was ever thus.”" It might be that Musk's move into government is just what we need. Just as Cummings was widely touted as some form of genius, until he actually had to do something and it became obvious he was just an arrogant mouthy twat, Musk in government won't be able to hide behind a top management team but will have to deliver. Without a structure to control his poor instinct and terrible decision making, it's going to be fun to watch.
