More female MPs than ever before
We already know there'll be a record number of women in the new House of Commons.
Some 242 female MPs have been voted in so far – and the counting's not over yet.
That surpasses the previous all-time high of 220, which was set in 2019.
BBC
Turnout expected to be second lowest since 1885

Labour have lost Dewsbury and Batley
Tories have now forfeited 30 deposits, more than ever in their history. (And nearly as many as Reform apparently)

A few final thoughts.
Firstly excellent news to have the adults back in the room, nearly 500 mps between Labour and the lib dems.
This was quite a bizarre election. The Tories had their worst vote share ever, while the lib dems vote share was only up marginally on their 2019 performance and yet because uniquely their vote share is reflected more or less in seat count by far the best performance ever for a third party.
For the Tories a catastrophe.
For Labour a result very similar to the Blair led election in 1997 but with around five million less votes and 5% lower than achieved in their loss in 2017.
For refuk thankfully not the seat breakthrough predicted and well done the greens.
The exit poll while indicative wasn't as accurate as normal.
That's it grand parent duties now.

A salute to those of you battling through the night and giving updates which when I woke up (have to work today)were more succinct and readable than the news sites.
On Lab vote share while it's not as high as hoped I remind myself that while desperately wanting a Lab govt I didn't vote Lab myself but LD in Didcot and Wantage like huge numbers who turned to the LDs in southern England. There was also the tory sit on hands factor. There has been a lot of accepting acquiescence to a Starmer gvt as well as active choosing of it. There is huge scope for co-operation between our two largest progressive parties on most if not all issues. There is a very clear progressive mandate here.
So pleased reform performed less than the exit poll and other than Anderson with his personal vote picked up only some of the usual angry white east coast suspects. Also delighted the Greens appear to have equalled them not least so the BBC will be forced to talk about them as well!

Steve Baker on R4 (and probably everywhere else) interviewed saying thank god he is now a free man and no longer an MP.
Seems he has argued the welfare state is unaffordable and no one is willing to face up to that. That the developed world has already for too long been running its governments on credit, and its not sustainable. He gives it 20 years if things continue as they are before the Uk defaults on its debts.

Steve Baker on R4 (and probably everywhere else) interviewed saying thank god he is now a free man and no longer an MP. Others may feel the same way I know you are making a joke, but basically he is arguing that con just spent 14 years keeping the ponzi scheme going and it was impossible to go on much longer. He argues that the EU is somewhat to blame, but I dont see it: perhaps if we had a long chat he might be able to explain why he thinks so and what he sees as the solution and how an isolated UK will do better. But rather, to me he seems to be saying the world economic order as it functions now is not sustainable and will inevitably crash, as indeed it nearly did in 2008 but was propped up by debt. Con spent their time in office doubling down on crazy things to do which were just making matters worse even as they kept con in power for a bit longer. Liz Truss just lost her seat but her month in power didnt really change anything. It just highlighted the yawning chasm lying under government finances and perhaps broke the illusion.

There is huge scope for co-operation between our two largest progressive parties on most if not all issues. There is a very clear progressive mandate here. Ironic if this does happen. It strikes me that despite labour having just been the beneficiary of FPP elections, if there was a moment in history where they are about to become the absolute losers from it, it will be the next national election. They would be very well advised to use their 5 years to wholly reform parliament, create an elected lords and some sort of proportional commons. It would be handy to do so in cooperation with the libs as inheritors in this parliament of the centre right former conservative vote.
of course, labour might have a plan how this defeat in 5 years can be avoided but if so it isnt in their manifesto. Their voter support trend has been falling support steadily for 2 years. Only surpassed by con support falling steadily for 4 years. This election result or campaign did not change that trend.

Steve Baker speaking to BBC1 now as loud clattering going on in the background as chairs are being taken away from the hall, rather appropriate

Truss blaming the human rights act, at least in part, for her defeat. It’s a human right to remove her from power over us? Makes sense…

Over 400 seats on 34% of the vote. Them's the rules. LAB didn't make 'em.
