Miriam Margolyes is a legend This Miriam Margolyes ? "Margolyes is a member of the Labour Party and is registered to vote in Vauxhall. In August 2015, she was a signatory to a letter criticising The Jewish Chronicle's reporting of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's alleged associations with antisemites.[48] In November 2019, she endorsed the Labour Party in the UK general election because of their policies on the National Health Service.[49][50] Later in the month, along with other public figures, she signed a letter supporting Corbyn and describing him as a "beacon of hope in the struggle against emergent far-right nationalism, xenophobia, and racism in much of the democratic world".[51" WIKIPEDIA

If conditions are right in 4/5 years time very likely that the UK will seek Norway still trading agreement with the EU. This might be sufficient in short term as would be little desire to join the political EU. This would only give platform to anti EU parties and neither the UK or EU would want that.
To predict the General Election Result at this stage is presumptuous, but if Labour won a comfortable majority pressure on them would be to improve EU trading relations. Many of the previous remain supporters in Tories would revert to core beliefs and move towards the EU again if it was politically advantage to do so if they saw that as route to power.
Might be seeing the beginnings of that already. Tory membership angry at recent events is moving away cancelling memberships angry at their voice being ignored by MP's. Many of them will move to Reform UK as their vehicle. Also cannot ignore Farage comeback at some point. At next election rather than stand aside as in 2019 , the alternative Right will compete hard against Tory MP's in anticipation of Labour win, knowing the lower the Tory MP count, the higher chances of a new political force emerging after the election. Then after dust settles Conservatives become pro single Market, and the political environment is such that joining single market is inevitable.

mercian I thought you might like to know some of the background behind the Leicester result. Labour’s candidate Rajul Tejura has faced accusations she is a supporter of India’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) government, and a picture of her in front of a lifesize cutout of Narendra Modi, at an event she organised after his election victory in 2019, was shared widely on social media. A spokesperson for Tejura said she was not a member or supporter of the BJP. The city’s Labour mayor, Peter Soulsby, has commissioned an independent review to determine whether extremist Hindutva ideology, parts of which are pushed by the BJP in India, encouraged the disturbances last month. The advocacy group Muslim Engagement and Development previously issued a statement saying it was concerned about Tejura standing as a candidate “during a period of heightened tension in the city” and urged the local Labour party to reconsider. Her candidacy was also endorsed by the disgraced former Leicester East MP Keith Vaz, who appeared on a number of her campaign leaflets. Over 50% of the population of North Evington identify as Muslim. Thanks. I was aware of the Leicester situation though not in so much detail. I wonder if there will be a significant religious element in a number of inner-city seats from now on. Will parties select candidates in some seats based on the dominant religion of the area? But I didn't single Leicester out anyway. Labour's share of the vote fell in 3 of the 4 seats they contested on Thursday and only went up by 0.1% in Hartlepool. This just struck me as odd given the national opinion polls. A bit of a coincidence if there were special local factors everywhere.

A bit harsh? He's funded Starlink access (via SpaceX) from the start, without even being asked and at a lot of expense - a lot, lot more than most other wealthy people have done. Wouldn't it be better to ask what many other (often secretive) very rich individuals may want to do as their share? Hardly surprising he's not prepared for such a big commitment to be open ended and funded by SpaceX? And whilst on paper Musk may be wealthy, it's largely tied up as "paper wealth" - nowhere near the same as having a sum in a bank account. The same Starlink that is destroying professional ground-based astronomy because of the satellites reflecting the sunlight in the hours after dark and before dawn. When he started putting them into orbit he did nothing to reduce the reflections until the scientists started complaining. Even now they are a serious problem. The picture on the article shows just how bad it is. Musk is plain irresponsible. spacenews.com/astronomers-renew-concerns-about-starlink-satellite-brightness/Starlink is just a tool to fund Musk's SpaceX project. What drives him is his dream of getting to Mars. That's going to cost tens of billions of dollars. Starlink will provide the revenue.
He did listen to the astronomical community and redesigned his satellites to reflect less light. But if he wasn't the one putting lots of satellites into orbit someone else would. Every man and their dog are now fighting to get into the small satellite launch market, so there will be many more objects up there in the coming years, providing a myriad of services. Many satellites is the future.
On the plus side because these are in low orbits they will relatively quickly burn up when they run out of fuel. But Musk is being responsible because his use Krypton, so they can be brought down at their end of life.
When his new space launch system -- Spaceship (see my avatar) -- is operational it will be able to put 150 tons into low Earth orbit in one go. That will make is very cheap (estimates are $10m per launch, but Musk has suggested $2m) to put stuff up there. Space telescopes are far more effective and so astronomy will likely move into orbit.
We are already in a new world, where there is cheap access to space; Falcon 9 is (partially) reusable and launches every week. His new system will transform that even further. Indeed it may well transform aviation too. It offers the prospect of point-to-point transportation across the Earth, with even the longest flights (eg Europe to Australia or East Asia) taking far less than an hour.
What he has achieved to date is quite incredible. He has lots of ideas, some silly, some less so. But he has upturned the car industry and all the major manufacturers are now building EVs; he has upturned the space industry achieving the impossible of re-usability such that the other large players are racing to introduce reusable models of their existing rockets; he will very soon upturn the communications industry when he can launch his Starlink V2 satellites on his new Starship, such that in five years or so we will all be moving away from BT and Virgin (and their dependents) and using Starlink. Those are the things I can think of off the top of my head. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more.
Astronomers may not like it, but there are far too many ups for him to be stopped.

Wikipedia says the following about Hunt:
His previous business interests have seen him become one of the richest members of parliament.
He served under both the Cameron premiership and May premiership and became the longest-serving Health Secretary in British political history on 3 June 2018. During his tenure, he oversaw the imposition of a controversial new junior doctors' contract in England after a dispute in which junior doctors undertook multiple strikes; the first such industrial action for 40 years.
He is also a distant relation of Elizabeth II and Sir Oswald Mosley
Hunt was alleged to have had improper contact with News Corp. Emails released to the Leveson Inquiry detailed contacts between Hunt's special advisor Adam Smith and Frédéric Michel,[38] News Corp's director of public affairs and therefore a lobbyist for James Murdoch. The revelations led to calls from the Labour opposition and others for Hunt's resignation.
In July 2015, Hunt became the subject of the first petition on a new UK Government website to reach the threshold of 100,000 signatures required for a petition to be considered for debate in Parliament. The petition called for a debate on a vote of "No Confidence" in Hunt as Health Secretary,[78][79] and ultimately recorded 222,991 signatures leading to a debate on the motion being scheduled in September 2015.[80] However, the Petitions Committee would not have had the power to initiate a vote of no confidence so instead debated the contracts and conditions of NHS staff.
Could go on citing the NHS, but obviously given his length of tenure at Health, he is directly responsible for the current state it is in. Given Hunt's wealth and background it going to be another case of a a wealthy, entitled Tory Chancellor telling us all we need to make sacrifices.
Margoyles was expressing what many feel and think - in my opinion, with justification.

There are big stories & there are small ones. It doesnt matter what the Jewish M. Margoyles said or has said. She was merely expressing the frustration so many of us feel: that we are governed by imbeciles & that we cannot get rid of them. Fuck You! is the phrase on everyone's lips. The Brexiteers on here are up to their usual cheap rhetorical tricks, using Margoyles to divert attention from the real problems. Don't play their game. It is they who should apolgise for their past, the numpties who voted for a string of the worst PMs in Brit history & who support the Brexit that has brought us these PMs & governments and this chaos.
As Freedland said in the Guardian, the boast of Brexiteers that we took back control, is empty rhetoric: "the sovereignty delusion...... The three weeks since Kwarteng delivered his mini-budget have seen the shattering of that delusion. For Truss and her now ex-chancellor were given the rudest of reminders that in our interdependent world there is no such thing as pure, untrammelled sovereignty.. . . In this case, the restraint on sovereignty was not the EU: it was the money markets. But their verdict was as binding as any Brussels edict; more so. They ordered the removal of a chancellor after just 38 days in office and the cancellation of the government’s economic strategy. It is the financial markets that have taken back control." The big dream has become a nightmare.
There are big predictions and small ones. It seems likely that Truss will go. That Press Conference alone suggests that she cannot represent the government at PMQs etc & that her rhetorical skills are inadequate to the task of fighting a GE. Why wait. There will be some cabinet changes? It's surely time, for example, for Mogg, The Big Frack, to be sent back to his nanny. The pre(f)diction that there will be a GE is wishful thinking. Truss hasn't the power to call one & why would a 100+ MPs commit Policide. Labour should call for a GE, but if repeated too often the cry will become a shrill one. Oppositions should avoid shrillness. They should take a leaf out of Brown/Blair's pre-97 & look effortlessly like the government-in-waiting.

Musk and the satellite internet. Actually Motorola had a project on this about two decades ago. They spent 2.5 billion on it and then they had to write it off as the mobiles had to be a bit bigger than those you can see in the films from the 1980s.

I certainly think some of the UK electorate are completely stupid. The daft pricks who voted for Truss in the Tory party come to mind and those who still have a slavish cultist faith that their cognitively impaired decision in 2016 was still the right thing to do and still has popular support. I'm sure there's no one like that posting here of course. This is one of the reasons the left rarely does well. Some of their activists (you're not the only one on here) have utter undisguised contempt for sections of the electorate. Not a good way to win them over.

MUSLIM WOMEN IN BURKAS ‘LOOK LIKE LETTER BOXES’ Boris Johnson BLACK PEOPLE HAVE ‘WATERMELON SMILES’ Boris Johnson, in the same article as he referred to 'piccaninnies' MEN GET ‘A RAW DEAL’ AND FEMINISTS ARE ‘OBNOXIOUS BIGOTS’ Dominic Raab, 2011 BLACKFACE IS AN ‘ENTIRELY ACCEPTABLE BIT OF FUN’ Desmond Swayne and so on and so on through countless others. Presumably they all count as 'banter'.

mercian I have no contempt for the stupid. Some of my best friends are as thick as two short planks. Doesn't make them bad people. It's the stupid ones , or possibly it would be more accurate to say those who do stupid things and then insist they were right despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary who irritate me. Of course there's no one like that who posts here ! By the way thanks for calling me a left wing activist I'll bring that up at the next lib dem beer and curry evening.

colinYes she did commit the heinous crime of supporting the then Labour leader, hanging's too good for her. She also an 81 year old woman who has led an interesting life. As well as winning awards for acting she is a prominent supporter of Sense (the National Deafblind and Rubella Association) The legend comment was in response to her off the cuff remark about Hunt, I found it funny because it was unexpected in the context of her interview.

The Tories are in a bind. Changing course to pay for our whopping decicit via public spending cuts - likely to be seen as Austerity #2 - may becalm the markets but is unlikely to resonate with the voters, who already can't afford the cost of living.

Hi Steve, I omitted Margaret Thatcher's description of trade unionists as "the enemy within" and the one that offended me most of all - Theresa May's description of remain voters as "citizens of nowhere". Then there is Simon Heffer and Boris Johnson on Liverpool: “They see themselves whenever possible as victims, and resent their victim status; yet at the same time they wallow in it.” But as we know holding large sections of the electorate in contempt is only practiced by villainous lefties.

Jeremy Hunt, supposedly the "good Tory" (a bar that seems to get lowered every year since Thatcher), is quoted as saying that there will be cuts everywhere including "health". It's absolutely crazy stuff to be suggesting this when all the headlines are about ambulance queuing, often with hours waits for heat attack patients, bedblocking because there's nowhere to send patients afterwards, staff shortages, difficulty getting GP appointments, potential Covid spikes and a hundred other things in the headlines every single day.
Whatever the financial crisis we are facing, it's incredible that anyone would not be protecting and improving the health budget given the crisis the NHS is in.

There is no chance of rejoin in the next 25 year timescale. As I keep saying, we have left. There may be an appetite for better deals, trade deals and better arrangements for longer stays in the EU etc, but don't mistake that for rejoining. Sorting out the ridiculous Sausage War over NI would be a symbolic start. There is no appetite in the Red / Blue Wall for Freedom of Movement and net contributions to build infrastructure in the East. On sausages, etc:
ec.europa.eu/info/publications/protocol-ireland-northern-ireland-sanitary-and-phytosanitary-goods-sps_enFactsheet -- Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland: sanitary and phytosanitary goods (sps)
Only a single simplified official certificate is required...
Products subject to prohibitions/restrictions for import into the EU (e.g. chilled sausages) could also move from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, subject to them carrying an individual official certificate, for which specific models will be provided.
Documentary checks may be performed electronically. Identity and physical checks will be reduced by more than 80% compared to the applicable mandatory checks for animal-origin products under EU SPS legislation. It does mean we can't have a trade deal with the US. Has anyone told the brexiters that's not going to happen, and the only reason we don't agree to this easy solution is because it will make anyone who voted for brexit look stupid?

As to Musk, first much of the money is not his, but investors' hopeful that the businesses he creates will pay out big time.[1] I think Musk sees Starlink as a necessary intermediate step to fund his Mars obsession. But he's not stupid and knows a side-effect will be to probably dominate global network communication with such an enormous 'moat' (a la Microsoft and their OS) that makes it very difficult for the competition.
He loves Twitter, just as we all love UKPR2. It's just that millions of people want to ask him what he thinks, and he likes to tell people.
[1] He built Falcon 1 with his own money. Everyone laughed at him, and no one from Nasa would work for him. Then he succeeded and investor money poured in. Everyone loves a winner!

But I was commenting on the characterisation- "legend". Labour Corbynite expresses wish to swear at Tory Minister- its pretty low bar. But we live in a time of scarcity. Oh Colin you are naughty - if that had been the case you would have just written 'I don't think she warrants legend status'. Your selection of that part of Wikipedia was to paint her in a political light in which you think diminishes her. Personally I think her stance, as a Jewish woman, on Israeli govt policy and treatment of the Palestinians is perfectly legitimate as was her support for Corbyn - she also has a long and distinguished career as an actor, some may say legendary one.
As far as Hunt is concerned, I see him as someone in hock to Murdock, who is detached socially and economically from the experience of normal people and messed up the NHS. Definitely not a legend in my book.
