I did admit to nostalgia, Robbie, and, by implication, all its associated vices too! I think you should change your avatar to a picture of John Cleese and get a slot on GBTV. (comment should be taken in a jokey taking the 'p' manner)Mark - Help. I'm being stalked! Nay bullied. In a piss-taking sort of way, obvs, but I could do without the attention. Please sort.

So is the UK about to have the fourth Tory Chancellor of the Exchequer since July 2022 ( the same number as Labour has had since 1967 as pointed out on Twiiter)?

I really can't see Truss surviving. She appointed Kwarteng, she was in lock strp with him, it was her plan he introduced.

"The grass always looks greener on the sunny uplands when viewed through an MG Midget's rose-tinted rear mirror.' I found it looked closer when viewed through the space where the floor used to be on my old Morris Marina You're not supposed to be looking through the floor whilst driving. One begins to think that you may be part of the hedgehog extinction problem Steve!

K/T has had a glittering academic career. But I'm sure there have been plenty of successful Tory ministers with 3rd class degrees from Oxbridge who had what he lacks: political instincts.

Rumour that Chancellorship to be offered to Jeremy Hunt. I think mandolinist predicted he would be PM by Christmas? If he takes the CoE job then this becomes a more realistic possibility.

Kwarteng to be sacked, apparently.
Edit: From Stephen Swinford in the Times
Wow! If true phrases involving buses come to mind. Not sure how this will play out in regards to VI - will voters give her credit for changing course or see it as a sign of being weak and vacillating? I think the Tories are toast. People will see yet another set of rats being moved around the sinking ship and conclude that the next iteration will be no better than the past selections.

Well, not in a normal political world, or indeed in a properly functioning democracy, but this is our sceptred isle as it is today. Where a clapped out governing party can still do more or less as it pleases, be forgiven by an ever forgiving client press who wage war against the Opposition rather than hold the government to account and where a clearly incompetent PM, way out of her depth, can find ways of surviving. For all I know, thriving too one day. We're a basket case in other words. In such a dystopia, yes, it is perfectly possible Truss will survive and we as voters will continue to have to spectate the shambles. Relatively powerless. All that really matters are the Tory movers and shakers in Parliament. That's what our democracy has become.

Hardly worth flying back all that way was it? I'd have got sacked by phone then spent a long weekend partying in Washington.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, and I don't think I'll have time to read everything since last night, but there were 5 local by-elections yesterday. There was 1 Conservative hold, 2 Labour holds and 2 Conservative GAINS. 1 of those gains was where Labour didn't stand, but the other was a gain from Labour. Also Labour share of the vote fell in 4 of the 5.
Now I know that local by-elections mean very little, and there may well be special local circumstances and so on, but at a time when Labour are miles ahead in the national polls, doesn't this seem a little odd? It suggests to me that Labour support may be pretty soft.

The grass always looks greener on the sunny uplands when viewed through an MG Midget's rose-tinted rear mirror. Ps. An ... a....? As the only poster in possession of such a vehicle, (as far as I'm aware), this appears to be aimed at me. Perhaps you could clarify. i was teasing 'ole Batty who is a bit of a car buff. He was being nostalgic about Ukpolling1. Tho I thing Lady Val was also one of the Immortals, the Incorruptibles and Colin n Alex predated them. The last 2 must have submitted 15-20,000 posts. Everyone a jewel, a diadem. I think it was Brexit that ruined UKpolling1. The obsession with it certainly cleared out a lot of posters.

Greater love hath no Prime Minister than this, that she lay down her friends life for her own, to paraphrase John 15:13. She's just following Macmillan's example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_of_the_Long_Knives_(1962) where he dismissed his chancellor, Selwyn Lloyd. "Macmillan regretted the way the reshuffle was carried out, and was particularly concerned about his treatment of Lloyd, who was a loyal confidant." Liberal MP Jeremy Thorpe, in a humorous twist on a biblical phrase, observed that "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his friends for his life." Notably Macmillan's term as PM ended the following year.

If I recall correctly the proportion of people who thought Truss herself was doing a good job was 9% (and even then you wonder why it so high).

Kwasi clearly hasn't got a nose for survival after all. I imagine the conversation between “senior Tory MPs” and Truss was quite brief: ”Either he goes or you do Liz.” ”Right - I’ll give him a ring.”

“ A group of senior Tories have been holding discussions + have decided the following: the sacking of @kwasikwarteng will prompt them to come out publicly next week + call on @trussliz to resign. My source: “These are serious people. The PM will find it difficult to survive.”
