Without wanting to too sound too much like crossbat I am getting somewhat weary that the only people I have heard interviewed about this debacle on the BBC over the last few days have been Conservative back benchers, former Conservative SPADS and advisors and journalists from Conservative learning newspapers and magazines. Some of them have mentioned the British economy but the main interest of the interviewing BBC journo's seems to be what impact it all has on internal Conservative Party politics. I have heard it rumoured that opposition parties do exist and might have something to say, but apparently we don't need to hear from them. Leaving aside yet another wounding barb from crofty, there is nothing wrong at all with sounding too much like crossbat. I will forgive you omitting the essential suffix "11", but you shouldn't be so apologetic about citing the great man as one of your key influencers and opinion formers. Warney once stole my St Rishi of Furlough moniker for the former Chancellor during his brief period of popularity. He never thanked me for it though; he blocked me instead. That's gratitude for you. I never forgave him for it either. Sunak's brief period of popularity obviously, not Warney's, by the way. His was more like a blip although Big Col became a lifelong fan.

Apologies, I should have realised it is necessary to distinguish you correctly from crossbat10 and crossbat12. I think the Tory psychodrama (Episode 113) is finally causing me to crack. You should be grateful though - someone on here called me pjw1931 the other day.

Anyone know if the Israelis have got anything up their sleeve for shooting down those pesky Iranian drones? If they have I think they'll be sent to Ukraine pdq. If not - then they'll be getting worried.

Assuming R&W issue a poll today it will be interesting to see the Lab lead. I suspect that it will have increased following the chaos over the weekend. I don't know whether Hunt's statement this morning will give Cons a boost or whether the total U turn will increase the publics perception of a chaotic government and an AWOL PM.
In any case it is likely that most polling will have been conducted prior to this mornings statement.

Don't worry, I've just fast forwarded you to the modern world.
I'm afraid to inform you that this overdue updating means that you are now reconciled to The Hundred and no longer stuck in the days of the 17 member County Championship and all that silly three day cricket. When I get time, I'll tell you all about Durham CCC too.

I'll stop posting about football now, but I would like to mention that today's Wordle is even more out of order than the usual Americanisms. I did it in 3 sport, tho I confess that afterwards I immediately thought of the only other word that fitted the letters, and one more in use, in haberdashery at least. Our worthy constituent Sotonsaint is being a little sophistic in saying the word is in dictionaries: true, but while it is used in America, like howdy from the other day, no one uses it here. The football refs pass over my head. I do notice that the managers today behave worse than the players. I wonder what Busby, Nicholson, Ramsay, Jock Stein (geddit), Shankley, Fagan, Paisley etc would think. They were all ? distinguished half-backs or defenders as players & maybe lerarnt self-control in those positions.

A Tory interviewed by Nick Eardley outside the HOC this afternoon said there was a poll coming up at 5 which was very bad for the Tories - might be the R@W one

Sir John Curtice opining on the current polling and saying how many of the polling straws in the wind are now reminding him of the years before the 1997 General Election.
It is all starting to fall into place looking at some of the polling Hireton has just shared. Indicators beyond VI beginning to turn green for Labour.
I wonder if there will be a poll soon that asks the fateful question of who the voters think WILL win the next election. That usually is a very reliable indicator. Wishful thinking self-fulfillment.

Penny dreadful insisting there's a genuine reason why Truss isn't in the chamber. A hostage to fortune if this proves to be total bollocks and interesting what could have prevented her from being there if not.

We certainly do use it here! We have a lovely Bavarian-style drinking establishment here in Southampton which not only serves beer in the receptacles in question (ruined it now) but is named after them too. Dunno about any of the boring non-alcohol-related definitions for the word though. I did it in 3 also.

Sam Coates Sky @samcoatessky · Follow What's interesting is that Liz Truss on in the Commons estate while Penny Mordaunt is in the chamber 4:09 PM · Oct 17, 2022
So the total bollocks line appears more likely unless she's locked in the office toilet.

Truss seriously looks as if she has been given medication. Doesn't appear to be able to stop blinking. This can be a sign of anxiety or a neurological disorder.

colin - "First time I have heard that said." Really? A very similar sentiment was expressed on here, by those of us who said a 6 month window with readjustments as appropriate after that was much more sensible, and even if you weren't paying attention, it's a little surprising that you didn't twig this for yourself. It's such an obvious flaw it can be seen from space. In fact, I think you did actually understand the issue anyway, as I recall you posted about how temporary energy price falls had let HMG a little off the hook, reducing the projected cost of the cap. I have a memory that you actually posted some figures on this, but I could be wrong. Perhaps you were a little too quick to look for clear blue water between Truss' proposal and that duffer Starmer? I meant City comment-ie the Markets. I didn't understand how OBR would forecast it. With all comment centred on tax measures I wondered if the Energy Cap was being put in a separate box in some way. Anyway-it was clearly unsustainable.

So while you can heave a huge sigh of relief that the basics of economic policy have been fixed rather than the beginnings of a Greece meltdown, it's not a fix for the country as a whole. It isn't-and I wasn't. Thats why I said they have to concentrate on the Public Finances and Market confidence now-till the GE if thats what it takes. And if -as seems likely-they are defeated then, it will be only what they deserve for this episode.

As I suggested earlier, another increase in the Lab lead. Even I didn't expect such a large lead. Having watched parliament this afternoon and the PMs absence for most of it, I can see this lead increasing further.
