One point I would like to see highlighted though is covid. No surprise there then... I agree lab have pretty much just agreed with con throughout. Which is unfortunate since it means no one had a political incentive to call out the huge over reaction. The problem with this argument is that the costs of the epidemic are pretty much proportional to its duration. Since the action you propose is designed to make that duration longer, it pro rata increases the costs in all respects. Above you suggested people wear masks to slow spread of covid now. No! Far better we all catch it as soon as possible and get this next wave over before the weather worsens. Right at the start there was lots of talk about trying to have outbreaks in good weather. That was the official line, never mind the problem the longer the disruption lasts the worse is collateral damage. But you also raise anothe point. It's very obvious the nhs is currently under funded. But is government fixing that? no. Despite its promises during its imposed lockdown that money for health was no object. They lied, money always matters. But what really mattered then was to appear to be acting effectively against covid. Money was no object to make the government look good. Just as borrowing right now is primarily to make con look good not save the economy. Spending on health right now is way down the priority list. It's not what is making them look bad just now so it doesn't matter who quietly dies from what. oh tell it to Ukraine! They understand some things are more important. Ukraine now is probably more like the UK post WW2, when it switched to a much more socialist country. Spirit of all for one and one for all.

Thanks for that. Terrifying though - £40bn cuts to already collapsing public services to pay for tax cuts for the rich. Destruction of workers rights and the environment. Utterly horrific. Frightening stuff. The only consolation is that she only really has 2023 and a little of 2024 to deliver this nightmare agenda. Will still be destructive.

Opinium poll now out at 10pm Tweet from CEO of Opinium: Truss didnt do very well campaining to the members. Not nearly so good a blagger as Johnson, voters probably getting on board she is just as useless politically but less good as a comedian.
And then there are increasing contradictions between what was promised after brexit and what is really happening.

Bit of a side issue with the Opinium poll imminent and Liz apparently on the rampage again For those interested in the military aspects of the Ukranian war an excellent update from the Tippling Philosopher (warning - has some pretty grim and graphic transcripts, no pictures though) www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK0gk9_nDgA

I have not seen this level of "The People Will Thank Us For This Eventually" self delusion in Conservative apologists since... er... Brexit.

Opinium. Ouch.
"The survey by Opinium – which also reveals that Labour has extended its lead by a massive 14 percentage points in the last week alone, from 5 points to 19 points, and that Truss’s ratings are now lower than Boris Johnson’s at the height of the Partygate scandal – comes as some Tory MPs are beginning to demand the new prime minister’s removal from No 10 after less than a month in office."

Is Britannia Unchained another classic case of the book being much better than the movie? It probably isn't even the original screenplay. It's likely US funded thinktanks produced the original copy.

Extraordinary. There’s something not right about those two, mentally. They both seem to be missing important parts of their brains. What on earth made then think the parliamentary party would just go along with their lunacy?

I do wish the guy talking would restrain his use of the cursor though and maybe use a script instead of so much waffle. Watching the screen it’s like watching a mad bee zigzagging about for no purpose. Very jnformative - though horrifying - but could be presented so much better. I imagine he never watches back to see how it comes over.

It is said in cricket that you can't win a Test Match on the first day, but you can lose it.
Does Truss follow cricket?

Ok - so a bit more than my 8-9%. Isn't that supposed to be their 2024 prediction though? In which case there isn't going to be many Tory MPs left.

Chris Curtis (the guy from Opinium on BBC News 24 earlier) was clearly being coy.

I will use the Opinium poll at 10 to start a new polling thread.
Given the size of the shift in polling, I think it's prudent to do so. I know it's Opinium, but....

crossbat11 - "Is Britannia Unchained another classic case of the book being much better than the movie?" Not really. More an example of where they chose the wrong title. It should have been 'Britannia Unhinged'.

Cucumbers for growth. And tomatoes. Edit: sorry, I forgot lettuces. Seems an odd policy for Conservatives. Surely we all just instruct the Head Gardener to ensure that there is a constant supply of fresh fruit and vegetables for the chef to prepare?
