As well. Clearly really a part of China unlike Tibet. Indefensible in the face of the chinese hordes. However the Chinese government wont want to destroy the economic success any more than it did with Hong Kong. So I reckon there will be an annexation but not just yet.
Why would they want to invade now? Nothing is going to be lost leaving it for the future. By the time that China is equally prosperous, it will be far easier to annex peacefully.
Trumps comments are like those of Putin, an appeal to fear and nationalism.

President Biden has said that the US military would defend Taiwan against a Chinese invasion, contradicting established policy and setting out a clear challenge to Beijing during his first visit in office to east Asia.

The Times 24/05/22 Not sure if this is a contradiction of previous policy as such, more a departure form diplomatic ambiguity.
Whilst the Taiwan Relations Act does not commit the US via a firm guarantee to come to Taiwan's defence, but it does not prohibit it. The recent un-ambiguous statement of US intervention is obviously linked to Ukraine - perhaps the West have learnt something.
